On Thursday, 2nd July 1903, the first international motor race to be held anywhere in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was raced for the Gordon Bennett Cup. The route consisted of two loops that comprised a figure of eight; the first was a 52 mile loop that included Kilcullen, The Curragh, Kildare, Monasterevin, Stradbally, Athy, followed by a 40 mile loop through Castledermot, Carlow, and Athy again.

William Swinden Barber FRIBA (1832 – 1908) was an English Gothic Revival and Arts and Crafts architect, who was born in Southowram.

Amongst his works is the Victoria Cross at Akroydon, the Victorian era model housing scheme at Boothtown, Halifax, West Yorkshire, which he designed in 1875.

The Serbian Orthodox Church referred to above is located on Lancaster Road, Notting Hill. At the end of this road, there is a branch of Greggs, whose head office is located on the Quorom Business Park in the Longbenton area of Newcastle upon Tyne.
