Pontrhydfendigaid is known for the ruins of the Cistercian Strata Florida Abbey, which was founded in 1164. Mount St Bernard Abbey, near Coalville, Leicestershire, was founded in 1835 in the parish of Whitwick, and is now in the parish of Charley. It is the only abbey belonging to the Cistercian order left in England, and the monks there brew the only Trappist beer in Britain.
