Plymouth also has a namesake on the east coast of the USA (Brighton's is -- to be exact -- Brighton Beach in Brooklyn).

Devonport, Plymouth, is the largest Naval base in Western Europe. The Royal Navy has two others, Portsmouth and Clyde (aka Faslane). The closest civilian settlement to the latter is Garelochhead

Allhallows-on-Sea, Kent, has also been in the past (in Allhallows's case, for a fairly brief period) a favoured quite-nearby location for seaside breaks, for many people from the nearby big city -- re Allhallows, London; re Garelochhead, Glasgow. Changing circumstances and conditions, caused both places mostly to lose that role.

Langport in Somerset is also on the line of the River Parrett.

The Battle of Langport, 10th July 1645, was the last significant battle in the first phase of the English Civil War (Parliamentarian victory). The war's first battle of any magnitude (an indecisive one) was Edgehill, 23rd Oct. 1642 -- nearest settlement Radway, Warwickshire.

Llynypia is another settlement that was affected by events that occurred during the miners strike in 1911.

The name means in Welsh, "The grove of the magpie". Another settlement with a name (probably) derived from a species of bird is Swanbourne, Buckinghamshire -- reckoned to mean "swan stream".

Worcester likes to style itself "The Faithful City", for its till-the-last-ditch Royalist allegiance in the Civil War(s). In somewhat similar mode, Londonderry (for those there of the Protestant persuasion, anyway) espouses the title of "The Maiden City" -- having never fallen to a siege.
