The Newport Bridge at Stockton, opened in 1934, claims to have been the first major vertical lift road bridge in the UK. However in terms of age the Turnbridge Lift Bridge over the Huddersfield Broad Canal in Kirklees, an administrative area of Huddersfield, predates it by some seventy years.
Letcombe Regis also has the site of an Iron Age hillfort within its environs.
