I have read this report and it makes very interesting reading. Everything included in the Phase One proposals is now in hand. I have set out some of the Phase Two proposal in order of priority. It would be interesting to garner some comments on the proposals. I have deliberately left out Light Rail and service enhancements and only included ‘New Works’.

Priority Rank Number.

1. Beddau – Cardiff, new rail line on disused rail corridor.

1. Rail to Urban Extension: NW Cardiff, Jc 33. (extension of Coryton Line).

5. Caerphilly – Newport, new rail line on disused rail corridor.

10. Use of Cardiff – Newport relief lines with new stations.

17. New station at Crumlin.

19. New station Upper Boat.

20. Electrified Llanhilleth Passing Loop, + 2 tph.

22. New Station, Caerleon.

23. Ystrad Mynach – Bedlinog on freight line.

28. Abertillery – Llanhilleth, new rail line on disused rail corridor.

36. Aberdare – Hirwaun, with new station at Trecynon.

47. New Station, Crwys Road. (Cardiff)

51. New Station, Brackla.

A station at Crwys road between Cardiff Queen Street and Heath Low Level I think is needed especially with the shopping and residential area's surrounding it.

The station at Brackla is long over due, the land where the station is proposed is still available and this station having easy acess to Bridgend Industrial Estate I think would be very busy during the peaks.

Extending the Coryton line would be benefitial especially if it helps increase passenger numbers

So does the priority list above mean that the Beddau line and the Junction 33 park and ride are part of the same scheme?

Some thoughts

  1. Nothing new.
  2. Where are corresponding reports from SWITCH, TAITH and TraCC?
E-mailed SWWITCH a while ago about a few different matters. One of my questions was whether they could supply a copy of the rail report they commissioned some time ago (2002 and then updated in 2005). The relevant part of their response was:
Ideally SWWITCH would like to be able to refresh this in the same way that the South East consortia has done in the last few years, but we currently have no funding to do so.
No money, no study. The other two regional transport consortia are probably in a similar suituation. Didn't SARPA report the mid-Wales consortia (TraCC I think) is cash-strapped Gareth?

In the absence of the SWWITCH report, I think their old study mooted 5 trains a day Fishguard - Carmarthen shuttle and 3 trains an hour between Carmarthen and Swansea (hourly Milford Haven services were included too I think).

My opinion is the 3tph suggested south/east from Carmarthen should be split into 2tph Carmarthen - Swansea and 1tph Carmarthen - Cardiff (express, calling at Llanelli, Port Talbot and perhaps Bridgend only). 156s/155s/153 for Swansea trains and 158s for the Cardiff ones.
