This years work on the embedded rail replacement project commences on 4th May. This time the works are focused on the Halfway/Herdings corridor (Blue and Purple routes).

Area 1 works are around Hackenthorpe and Donetsk Way and sees Blue route trams towards Halfway P&R terminating at Birley Lane to a revised version of the Coronavirus emergency timetable. Purple route trams will still run Cathedral-Herdings Park as normal but to a revised timetable in order to co-ordinate with Blue route trams on the common section of route Gleadless Townend-Cathedral. The Yellow route and Tram Train are not affected. No Supertram service will operate between Birley Lane and Halfway, information on alternative bus services can be found at travelsouthyorkshire.com, Stagecoach buses will accept valid tram tickets.

Area 2 works see trams terminate at Gleadless Townend, area 3 at Sheffield Station and area 4 at Donetsk Way. The works run until end of September although the exact details will depend on the ongoing situation with Coronavirus restrictions.

Tram timetables for area 1 are now available at supertram.com and are also in the journey planner on the Stagecoach bus app.

Area 2 works commences on Saturday 6th June.

This sees trams on the Blue and Purple route start/terminate at Gleadless Townend, with the lines beyond to Halfway and Herdings Park closed.

Area 2 works are now underway.

Following new government funding, the timetables will be increased from Sunday 14th June with full operating hours (generally until midnight) and higher frequencies than the current Covid-19 temporary timetable.

Blue route: Malin Bridge-Gleadless Townend: will run every 15-20 minutes
Yellow route: Middlewood-Meadowhall: will run every 15-20 minutes
Tram Train route: Cathedral-Rotherham Parkgate: will run about every 30 minutes.

There is engineering work on Network Rail on Sunday 14th June which sees main line trains diverted via Woodbourn Junction, Tinsley and Rotherham Central, trams will be sharing tracks with Cross Country and Transpennine Express as well as Northern, there are some minor retimings to tram train services to accommodate those extra trains!

The rail works moves to area 3 from 25th July to 1st September with various work sites from Spring Lane tram stop to Gleadless Townend and trams terminating at Sheffield Station. In addition engineering works on Network Rail will impact Tram Train services on 8th and 9th August.

Services from 25th July
- Blue route will run from Malin Bridge to Sheffield Station to a new timetable at pre-covid frequencies (up to every 10 minutes).
- Yellow route will return to the normal pre-covid timetable.
- Purple route remains suspended (complete route closed for rail replacement)
- Tram Train continues on the current half hourly service, except for 8th and 9th August when a reduced timetable will operate due to Network Rail restrictions to accommodate engineering works and other trains being diverted.

It is expected that SYPTE with their partners Powell's bus will operate a tram alternative bus service between Sheffield City Centre and Halfway during these rail replacement works.

Area 3 works are now continuing until 14th September.

Area 4 begins on 15th September with Blue route trams running through towards Halfway as far as Donetsk Way and the Purple route will make a comeback, both routes running to a revised timetable. This phase of rail replacement works is mostly on the road crossings around Crystal Peaks.

What is quite interesting is that the Tram Replacement Buses are operated by Powell’s even though it’s Stagecoach Supertram.

I noticed that. I don't remember anyone other than Stagecoach operating the TRBs before. I wonder why the change.

At a guess, the need for more buses to cover social distancing means that Stagecoach don’t have the capacity they normally do?

It isn't Supertram providing replacement buses, the BL2 is a tendered local bus service run under contract to SYPTE and Powell's won the contract (presumably able to do the job cheaper than the other bidders including Stagecoach). Powell's has brought in resource from sister operator CT+ of Leeds (both part of the Hackney Community Transport group).

You need to keep in mind it is still the case that ALL public transport only continues to operate thanks to government funding as with the Covid-Safe restrictions and very low passenger numbers it isn't otherwise financially viable to operate and the money for light rail and buses is routed via local authorities.

Not surprised at the delay, from a passerby perspective I haven't seen a lot of progress until this week.

I've not had any reason to be in the areas concerned in the last 6 months so not seen myself, I know area 3 is spread over several work sites between Spring Lane and Gleadless Townend with the work on City Road likely to be fun traffic wise!

Anyway, area 4 begins on 15th September and is mostly road crossings around Crystal Peaks, with Blue route trams turning at Donetsk Way. Also within this period there are some additional engineering works on Sundays 20th and 27th September in the West Street and Hillsborough areas with trams turning at Cathedral on those two days.

Area 4 also sees the reopening of the Herdings branch and the reintroduction of the Purple route on a temporary timetable.

There doesn't appear to be anything on the Supertram or Travel South Yorkshire website about the works at Crystal Peaks or Hillsborough yet.

The dates for area 4 (Crystal Peaks) are listed, assume the further details will be closer to the time to avoid confusion: https://travelsouthyorkshire.com/en-gb/newsupdates/rail-replacement.

West Street/Hillsborough is separate engineering work just on a couple of Sundays. Knowing SYPTE they'll probably list it seperate on the service disruption page https://travelsouthyorkshire.com/en-gb/disruptions but it should also appear on the Supertram website in due course, its 3 weeks away yet.

Area 4 rail replacement works (Crystal Peaks area) commences Tuesday 15th September with Blue route trams running as far as Donetsk Way with Stagecoach Yorkshire bus BL3 (operated under contract to SYPTE) providing a connection onwards to Halfway. This bus will actually run from Birley Moor Road to Halfway via Donetsk Way. More info: https://travelsouthyorkshire.com/en-gb/newsupdates/rail-replacement

Seperate weekend engineering works are taking place in the West Street & Hillsborough areas on Saturdays 19th & 26th and Sundays 20th & 27th September, on these days the Blue and Yellow routes will terminate at Cathedral with Powells Bus Y1 (operated under contract to SYPTE) providing a connection from Fitzalan Square to Middlewood.

Tram information for both sets of work can be found at https://www.stagecoachbus.com/news/...-4-rail-replacement-15-september-to-4-october
