Largely because you're returning today and there is no CDR between BHM and SHF whereas they do exist splitting at DBY

Is there any logic to which journeys cheap day returns are available on? Sheffield - Birmingham is 1.5 hours max each way for example.

I believe it is about 50miles for which day tickets are sold but of course that has changed a fair whack over the years. Indeed, according to LM (src) it is:

For shorter off-peak journeys (generally less than 50 miles), outward and return travel must be taken on the date printed on the tickets.

For this journey it's also personal knowledge since I do that journey in the opposite direction
