Shields Road Depot Glasgow.

    I was wondering could anyone give me and insight on these questions about the depot.

    -The basic function of the depot

    -Main areas of the depot

    -The type of units maintained at Shields depot

    -Why maintenance is carried out

    -The type of systems that are maintained

    Hello david, I can help with some of your queries, though i'm sure someone else will be able to give you further information. Shields road is responsible for maintains all of Scotrails emu fleet, units concerned are 314, 318, 320, 322, 334 and the 380's when they come into service. There is currently a new shed being constructed in addition to the current one, due to be completed for the arrival of the 380 fleet. Not sure of exactly the types of maintenance that goes on, i'll leave that to one of our rolling stock technician members, but I believe it to be very extensive nonetheless. I think there is a wheel lathe at shields also, but I may be wrong on that count.

    I dimly recall from my youth that this depot was often referred to just as 'Shields' and not always 'Shields Road'. Is that right?

    Back then it was lovely 311 units and class 81 roarers based there.

    Yes indeed, I and many other of my colleagues just refer to it as shields even today. :)

    To service and maintain electric trains
    To store trains between duties

    Main shed for vehicle inspection, servicing, and maintenance
    Lathe shed for the correction of wheels

    Routine servicing and maintenance of electric trains
    To store trains between duties

    Electric Multiple Units
    Electric locos (if required)
    In the past the depot has maintained locos from Class 81 through to Class 90
    The APT was also allocated to this depot
    Class 390 units have also been maintained recently (overnight repairs)
    A whole range of EMUs; 303, 305, 311, 314, 317, 318, 320, 322, 334
    DMUs and locos are also maintained at the Lathe Shed

    Parts wear out
    Service intervals

    As an aside, there is temporarily a shortage of space at the depot due to one or two of the lines being out of use due to the ongoing works to expand the depot in preparation for the new units. This has led to an increase in the amount of emu's stored at corkerhill, just up the road, which has the whole class 156 fleet allocated to it.

    Cheers for the help guys.

    The reason I ask is that I need to make an essay in under 1000 words on all these points and hand it to scotrail for the final part of my assesment to become an engineer with them.

    As a candicate, why not visit the depot
    If you take your letter of assignment with you, you will be amazed what doors it will open for you!
    Ask to make an appointment so that you can discuss what the depot does for your employment role
    Furthermore, if you include details that you actually made arrangements to visit the depot you will then be seen as a more "suitable candidate"

    I concur with rail-britains suggestion. It would be silly for you not to consider doing this. Even if permission was refused, the fact you asked would do you no harm whatsoever.

    I was already thinkin goin down and seeing what info i could get and as you guys say it does no harm.
