With the well documented Azuma (and other Class 800's across the network) shortages, there are a number of 5 car Azumas operating services that should have been formed of a 9 car set. One thing that I have seen recently on LNER's website is an odd coach lettering scheme where a 5 car set is used instead of a 9 car set.
5 Car: A-B-C-D-E
9 Car: A-B-C-G-H-J-K-L-M
10 Car: A-B-C-D-E--F-G-H-K-M
Yet the above quote from LNER's website shows a 5 car set as: A-B-K-L-M
Does this amended formation not cause confusion as I have never seen this publicised anywhere on LNER's website. Coach K normally contains both first and standard class seating, yet in the formation above it'll only contain standard class seats. Likewise, coach L is first class only on a 9 car Azuma, so why is it being used for the composite carriage here? Three services are short formed and are listed as such tonight.
If they aren't going to use A to E, I would have thought a formation such as A-B-C-K-M would make more sense to prevent confusion and share as much in common with a 9 car set as possible.
Has anyone seen an Azuma running with the coach letters shown in the quote from LNER's website? Can anyone shed any light into why LNER have chosen to do this in the event of a short formation?
For those of you that aren't familiar with their layout, Azumas are normally formed as follows:20:03 London Kings Cross to Leeds due 22:21 will call additionally at Grantham.
Will be formed of 5 coaches instead of 9.
