I want to travel on a single carriage train, just for the sake of it really. Does anything operate from Birmingham Worcester or Coventry? Thanks.

I believe the Coventry-Nuneaton shuttle is usually a single 153, and of course the Stourbridge shuttle is a 139 if that counts.

why not make a day off it? Travel from Brum to Norwich direct, then take in the breath taking experience of the Broads. as you glide through them aboard, your desired 'scud'..If you treat yourself to a rover ticket, you'll be able to take in the resorts of Sheringham (perhaps even visit the NNR..), Cromer, Great Yarmouth and even Lowestoft. What more could a city dweller wish for? You may even get your ticket clipped by 'The Edge', however it's not the same one, who skips about with that Irish pop music ensemble..

If you want to try it 1960s style, I suggest the Princes Risborough - Aylesbury line in the peak times, weekdays.

Swindon to Westbury on the TransWilts line is also booked a 153?

(or at least was when I did it and it was rather unwell!)

Not really West Midlands, but Bedford to Bletchley and Cleethorpes to Barton-upon-Humber both produce single 153s (though there is a 150 diagram on the Bedford-Bletchley line). I think Crewe-Derby produces some single 153s too.

Unusually, it's easy to tell which the Bedford-Bletchley 153 diagram is, as it is marked on the public timetable as "limited cycle space". On weekdays they are very unlikely to end up swapped as the 153 isn't big enough for the school trains.

That said, cancellations are common as there is no spare unit, so your 153 might become a minibus.

Crewe to Shrewsbury shuttle is usually a 153 as our the Heart of Wales trains on weekdays. Shrewsbury would be your nearest option to see them.

Although further away, most of the East Midlands Trains local services between Peterborough and Spalding / Lincoln and Newark North Gate to Grimsby are single 153s.

Whenever I've passed through Crewe, the shuttle to/from Chester (ATW) has always been a cl-150 whilst the Derby via Stoke (EMT) has almost always been a cl-153

I've seen pairs of 153s, 158s and a 156 on it in recent history, but also single 153s.

I've seen 158's and 175's on the Crewe to Chester shuttle.

Yes you'd get your fill of single coAch travel if you went all the way over the line. The 0900 ish off Shrewsbury actually runs through to Cardiff after arriving in Swansea 4 hours plus if you fancy it.

Booked for a 150 I'm afraid! Its inbound working from Swansea is very busy with school children, usually about a hundred passengers on when it gets to Shrewsbury so it needs a 150. All other weekday services are booked 153 though. That is all liable to change with the new timetable mind.

Booked 150 although 158s and 175s do occasionally appear. 153s are problematic because no one at Holyhead or Llandudno Junction signs them, and neither do a large amount of the drivers at Chester (all the guards there do though). Throughout the day you'll see drivers from 5 and guards from 6 different depots on the shuttle (even Cardiff guards have a trip on it!).

As mentioned earlier, the Crewe-Shrewsbury shuttle is booked for a 153, although again that is liable to change with the new timetable when it will interwork with the heart of Wales line.

    Long time since I've seen a 153 on the Crewe - Chester shuttle. I would say it's 90%+ 150/2.

    Crewe-Shrewsbury shuttle I would say is 80%+ 153.

Crewe - Derby often a 153, but can also produce 156 or 158 - or a 222 on special occasions!

153 regularly on Worcester to Hereford. Attached to a 170. Last time for me, oddly with the big can at the join.

my apologises - you'll need an EMT/XC combo to get you there, changing at either P'bro or Ely, which ever is your personal choice..

Chester to Crewe shuttle has been booked for 150 for some years now and before that a 158. Long time since 153. Crewe to Shrewsbury is booked 153.

Doncaster to Lincoln is usually a class 153 single carriage train as is Newark to Lincoln. Both provided by East Midlands trains.

Crewe - Derby is often strengthened on Uttoxeter race days, or at other times of possibly enhanced demand. A few weeks ago, the three diagrams consisted of
    153 x 3
    158 + 153 x 2
    and 158 + 156.

I am told that even Meridians have been used, but have not seen that myself. However, on many days, all three diagrams are single 153s.

Also, single 153s are sometimes used on Nottingham - Derby - Matlock services.

Reminded me of Scuds running the entire Skegness to Manchester Airport via Crewe. Must've been a superb way to start & end your holiday NOT.
