This was waiting in the down loop at Stockport at 17:00 on 02/04/2012, topped and tailed by 31465 and DRS 37688. Anyone know what it was doing?

Two trains were out that would pass through that area today capable of working as a single coach, MENTOR and TIC. If it had a pantograph, it was MENTOR. If it didn't, and had funny windows, it was TIC.

Many, many fine test trains!

New Measurement Train (NMT)
Stucture Gauging Train ( The death star!)
Track Recording Unit (TRU - the Class 950)
Mentor (OHLE Insecpction)
Track Inspection Coach (TIC)

I am sure an expert will be along soon to give you more information

Thanks, Hydro and DarloRich - it was TIC. I glimpsed MENTOR running through Cheadle Hulme the previous day - I think TIC might also have been included in that formation.

Plus Track Recording Coach (TRC, formerly known as HSTRC in Research/Serco days), Ultrasonic Test Units 2, 3 and 4 (soon to be joined by 1), MPV, Radio Survey 1 and 3 (GSMR test vehicles). Loads of them. NMT is a mere trifle compared to some of the work the others do.

I'd call those On-Track Machines. Not a "real" train!

I think it was TIC I saw stabled at Doncaster at about 13:15 yesterday. 31233 was at one end of it, but does anybody know what the DRS 37 at the other end was?
