SJ invests in thriving sleeper trains

Key points:
  • SEK 150 million investment in overhaul of 58 sleeper carriages
  • 100% increase in passengers on Malmö - Stockholm route
  • 25% increase in passengers on Gothenburg - Narvik route
  • Second class ticket holders will get an option to reserve a private sleeper compartiment (currently only possible with 1st class ticket)
It's good to see that there are multiple railways which see a future in night trains, after the demise of CityNightLine.

Very good news, indeed. Considering several operators have curtailed overnight trains it's nice to see some still value such services.

Malmo to Stockholm was nearly withdrawn about 5 years ago, so a 100% increase may be from a rather low base, and I detect a little bit of PR here. 25% for Narvik seems more realistic, and very positive news.

Given the exchange rate, this is about £12m.

One suspects the refurb needed doing, and it was a choice of refurb or close the service. Given the growth, refurb was the way forward. However compared to the money being spent on the Cally Sleeper, this is peanuts.

Excellent news! Good that not only the sleeper services are being refreshed, but that 2nd class passengers can book single compartments.

I've found the first class sleepers to be good value, as you get lounge access, a private compartment, an in room shower and a full buffet breakfast at an arrival station.

Finland is another country where the sleepers are comfortable and seem to be well used.

This has been known for some time here in Sweden. The government has been taking some interest in retaining the sleeper services, particularly the Malmö - Stockholm and Stockholm - Östersund - Storlien routes, as these has been threatened. After SJ announched the Malmö - Stockholm route wasn't profitable a few years back the local authorities as well as several local businesses announched their support for the service. Since then the ridership has risen a lot. Now the government is of the opinion that these services are necessary even though they aren't viable from a commercial viewpoint.

A Copenhagen extension would be very nice, unfourtantly none of the sleeper stock is currently allowed across the Öresund fixed link. It would require dual-voltage and dual-ATC locos (the Rc6 class locomotives currently being used are 15kV and Swedish ATC only) and something known in Swedish as "nödbromsöverbryggning", essentially meaning that the driver can cancel a passenger initiated emergency brake application and stop in a suitable location instead (very important in an emergency on the Öresund bridge or in the tunnels).

Will it be a good idea to restore the Hamburg-Stockholm/Oslo night train so called “Alfred Nobel” train but divert it via Sassnitz and Trelleborg instead of Denmark which they used to do.....

That's an amazingly indirect route, why? Much more sensible to build/convert stock that can use the Oresund route.

By the time you've faffed around getting to Sassnitz you would be in Denmark if you just stuck to land!

Trelleborg only works for Berlin to Malmö as there's no viable land route.

Didn’t know that the existing rolling stock in Snalltaget should be modified to use Øresund Route.....

There's a 4km tunnel from Copenhagen Airport (to the artificial island of Peberholm) and there's a 6km tunnel running underneath Malmö, which links the Swedish rail network to the bridge.

I am guessing that some changes are needed to deal with tunnel and fire safety regulations, for example to allow the train driver to override passcom activations whilst in a tunnel.

The issues were discussed earlier in a separate thread. Suggest start here:
