...how many are there in use on the railway network?

Let the counting begin

(Mods: I would have put this in the quiz section, but I don't know the answer!)

The fact this is in infrastructure might be a clue that we aren't on about that kind of sleeper.

I don't use the category search, so never noticed the difference
The answer would be nil then
They are all under the network, or at least they should be!

Aren't you a smart one. How many of those have Wi-Fi?

I'm guessing work out how many miles of track there are then times by how many sleepers in a mile. (give or take the odd junction etc..)

From a track renewals perspective, the most popular types to be installed are G44 (full depth concrete), EG47 (shallow depth concrete), W560H (Steel) and EG49 (Pandrol housings and for 3rd rail). As for what gets taken out, hundreds of types!! Hardwood, Softwood, Concretes - for pandrols, Mills Clips, S&C - all sorts

You could probably give a round-about figure but really you couldn't know how many there actually is on the network.

Could we also count people who are on sleeper trains? As they are on the national network, and they are sleeping, so they would be sleepers :p

What about places where there aren't any? In the FCC platforms at St Pancras, the chairs are bolted straight onto concrete slab.
Is that one great big sleeper, or an infinite number of very small ones?

How far east can you go before you're heading west?
Do dentists go to other dentists or do they just do it themselves?
Why is vanilla ice cream white when vanilla extract is brown?
Why does a round pizza come in a square box?
What was the best thing before sliced bread?
If a bus station is where a bus stops, and a train station is where a train stops, why do I have a work station on my desk?

Someone else; it is not possible to perform surgery on yourself. Similarly, doctors can't self diagnose and can't self-prescribe.

Why is vanilla ice cream white when vanilla extract is brown?

Because real vanilla ice cream isn't white, but is a yellow colour. The white stuff is fake and full of chemicals.

What was the best thing before sliced bread?

Sliced bread is awful.

Does anyone remember Pizza Hut did that (although oblong)?

Yes I do. It was divided into 4 different topping sections, Meat feast, ham 'n' mushroom, spicy and some sort of vegetarian selection (i think!).
