I remember reading this article a few months ago after it had been in the news but didn't realise it was now in effect in some places, let alone the ridiculous rules placed on some store staff.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-12680815

This evening, I was in my local Asda, a smaller branch which replaced Netto some months ago. What used to be a normal display of cigarettes is now covered by plain white sliding doors. Normally I smoke rolling tobacco and as I didn't have a great deal of money on me, I told the cashier that I wanted 10 cigarettes, but as I couldn't see the prices, could she please open the doors so I could see what was available.

What I received was a blank look, and an explanation that she could not open the doors for this purpose, but only if I asked for a packet of cigarettes or asked for a specific price from which she could look behind and tell me. Knowing there was a branch of Sainsburys Local over the road, I told her not to bother and began to walk away only to be told that next time, I can request a price list on entering the store.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation yet?

No longer here
This is the situation at the Tesco where I live. I don't smoke myself so I don't know the reasoning behind this.

Can anyone else "enlighten" us? (Sorry, woeful pun)

Apparently it is merely to take the temptation away from people as they cannot see the product. I can completely understand that tactics are needed in order to discourage people from taking up smoking, or even relapsing after managing to quit but there are surely better ways than this?

Blimey it will be easier to buy heroin at this rate......

This practice has not spread to Scotland yet as far as I am aware - could be outside of Falkirk.

Is it being "rolled out" all over England or just Redcar ?

Its a bit daft I agree. And next they want to make the packets plain with horrible pictures on them larger then they are now. Which I dont quite understand, if they are out of site then bairns wont see them and wont be tempted - what good will a plain packet do?

Perhaps the answer is to have Cigarettes on Prescription - and as there are no charges up here I'd be all in favour

Butts good post! where will it all end perhaps they could hide away high fat content food behinds these shutters as these can be bad for your health. Do they really think that if people cant see these things they wont want them? I dont imagine there will be less smokers as a direct result. Whilst we are about it! drinkaware.com please drink this responsibly blah blah it was nice to go to Italy recently and drink a beer without suck eggs messages all over the bottle!

These blinds have been installed at my local branches of Tesco too. Can't see it having much effect - everyone knows the cigarettes are still there. If people who want to give up are that weak willed I don't think hiding cigarettes like this will help.

All joking aside you are talking about a legal product being effectively consigned to "porn under the counter status"

Why is tobacco even legal today considering the damage it does to health?

Had my first experience of the 'under the counter' tobacco sales last night. Shortly to become legislation where tobacco products cannot be openly displayed. ASDA Melksham had shutters on their kiosk, with the staff saying they were already enacting the forthcoming legislation. A small printed list of what was on sale on one sheet of laminated A4 was all that was on display. Slight mockery made of my purchase though as the bloke on the counter had to open all the shutters, thus displaying every possible choice of tobacco products to me, before finding my Cutters Choice!

Felt like I was in Soho asking for 'special interest' porn.

What exactly could be done though? Turn millions of people into criminals overnight?
Well any ban would have to be phased in, the first stage could possibly be the introduciton of a licence.

As prohibition in America showed, if you ban a popular product, people will still get around it, usually criminal gangs take over its distribution.

I think I'd prefer better education on the effects of smoking with more focus on individual responsibility and choices rather than hiding cigarettes from view or banning them altogether. I don't have any stats bu it seems to me that hiding from view could make kids more tempted to try smoking by making them more curious as to why they are hidden, see what all the fuss is about.

Have there been any studies into different methods of smoking? ie cigars, pipes, sisha thingys, cigarettes. For example with Cigars you dont inhale the smoke to your lungs, so it could mean less tar buildup, and hence could be less damaging to helath..

Zoe a very controversial viewpoint! You could argue in the short term the government would have to impose tax on something else maybe long term there could be some benefits as in less NHS Burden. However people do unhealthy/unsafe things on a daily basis and where do you draw the line on people civil liberties no other country in the world has taken such a draconian step and banned smoking. After it has been banned perhaps they could go for alcohol, then perhaps fatty food such as bacon, & whilst they are about it perhaps they could ban driving as there are so many fatalities and injuries!! We live in a nanny state as it is. There are more CCTV cameras per head than anywhere else in the world

Cannabis is illegal though, why should it be any different for tobacco?

After someone has smoked cannabis, it would make it very dangerous to operate heavy machinery, drive and undertake safety critical duties this is not the case with tabacco. This is probably the main reason it is illegal Studies in recent years have concluded that cannabis has a much higher tar level.

It most certainly is the case with alcohol though and I don't see anyone wanting that banned. Tobacco is an addictive drug known to seriously damage health. If it were to be discovered today, I doubt it would be legal.

In this case it is already happening - and has been for some time now. Why go to a shop and buy a pack for around £5 when you can go to the boozer club and get a 200 pack for half the price?

Very true life is full of inconsistencies. I am not asking for an alcohol ban but you cannot deny it can cause if used to excess liver disease and lots of other diseases. If tabacco was discovered today probably would be banned but this is totally Irrelevant as that is not the case!:)
