The North East part of the ECML is in complete meltdown this morning. Electricity failure at Newcastle, points failure at Durham. Snowfall much heavier than anything seen for the last few years.
Any ideas what's up at Darlington? Loads of Northern units that should be going to Middlesbrough are just sat there. There was a points failure at Middlesbrough earlier but that seems to have been fixed (or at least NRE says it has and there have been some train movements).

Northern site is also showing signalling problems at Middlesbrough as well and claims everything is stopped. Haven't looked into more detail though, been busy sorting out school closure issues.

Northern Journey Check showing signal issues through Middlesbrough expected until 09:15

Currently aboard 1F65 0910 Newcastle to Liverpool as I need to get back to University in Sheffield.

Newcastle is a bit all over the place with this service being largely full already. 08:40 to Aberdeen is sat at Platform 2 not going anywhere and the only other thing announced as moving was an 08:41 to Plymouth starting here.

Transport for London is reporting only one closure: Central Line between Woodford and Hainault. Severe or minor delays on most other lines although Bakerloo, Northern, Victoria, Jubilee and trams all reported as Good Service.

On Greater Anglia, Broxbourne to Hertford East is closed due to an overhead line issue.

Most TfL buses appear to be operating although some areas off main roads are not being served. However most routes operated out of Arriva's Dartford and Grays Garages didn't get going until around 08.00.

I've not been slow to criticise the railway industry on numerous occasions but generally speaking I think they've done a pretty good job during this cold snap.

All those that complained yesterday that the Railway should be running a full service, hope they are happy today !

From National Rail Website
"Severe wintry weather is affecting Virgin Trains services today.
Trains are currently being disrupted in the following locations and may be delayed or cancelled:
  • Between Motherwell and Carlisle
You may use your ticket on Arriva Trains Wales and TransPennine Express services on any reasonable route, although please note these may also be affected by the severe weather."

I know we dislike bustitution, but I think the ability to use the above Virgin trains ticket on Arriva trains Wales is a diversionary step too far!

No they’ll just switch to moaning about how Canada, Switzerland (insert irrelevant arctic circle/alpine country) etc. can cope so why can’t the U.K.

Northbound VTEC's and some XC's will be delayed or diverted due to a broken rail between Doncaster and York

We are. Full credit to GTR it is running very well as well.

Some cancellations on my local Oxted line, but they are endeavoring to keep the service running & are doing a good job! Electrostars seem to be performing ok during this snowy/cold period along with the 700s.

The notorious East Croydon footbridge has been closed due to ice/snow & being too slippery.

Nothing has moved south through Newcastle for hours and a considerable queue has built up.

There's a train that's been stuck at Cambuslang since around 7 this morning.

Posted this in the Cally Sleeper thread but it has it's place here as well I guess. Unless it's already been posted but I couldn't see it.

There was no escaping the white stuff - even on the sleeper train to Edinburgh.

Mary Duffy was travelling into Scotland's capital when she spotted snow had worked its way through the gaps between carriages and doors.

Revenge is best served cold <D
Now now boys, keep the messroom talk where it belongs. ;)

Filtering out the rants, some of the criticisms from yesterday re: less mobility and flexibility in extreme weather these days do have merit though, only that the answer isn't really particularly straight forward.

Between the parallel lines
I see Southeastern have gone kaput. Ice everywhere, mostly in the points - also traction power and snow-related door problems.

The fact that the GTR service has gone into meltdown (not sure if that’s actually the thermally correct term, to be fair) south of the Thames must have escaped you!

Lines with a modified timetable are actually mostly running well, at least when it comes to bits outside London, but that’s only a couple of routes. The others, erm, aren’t.

However, this is largely due to an engineering train failing across a junction at Herne Hill, barricading northbound Thameslink services; a passenger service with a compressor failure at Moulsecoomb; trains frozen solid at Lovers Walk; and numerous points failures due to both ice and other things. The biggest points issues have been in Selhurst Depot about 0400 (fun for the staff dealing with that, I’d imagine...) and recently at Streatham Common.

Full credit to all Rail staff from all Companies, (Drivers/Signallers/PWay etc) that made the effort to get into work so that the actual service could start up ! road conditions were appalling this morning over a lot of the country, with a lot of roads in East Anglia closed or long tail backs, there may well have been delays due to snow clogged points that overwhelmed the heaters, but in Anglia there were (in our area) delays but not that many outright cancellations

We got a very sternly-worded email reminding everyone their obligations under the terms of employment.

Seems that the 0548 Edinburgh to London, having been stuck at Benton (north of Newcastle) for 45 minutes has seized up at Low Fell and ended up being sent back to Newcastle. Services were running wrong line for a time.

XC have eventually sent out the 0841 Newcastle to Plymouth though it's 47L out of Durham.

Been forewarned by guard of issues between York and Leeds though we're only 8 minutes late at Northallerton.

After what looked like a good day yesterday on the WCML it's gone downhill today. 0549 Glasgow Euston terminated at Oxenholme "due to a problem with the brakes (MN)." 0652 Edinburgh currently 83 mins down, mostly lost on the approach to Carstairs. Lots of Cardiff-Manchesters & VV missing but northbound trains running quite well.
Just shows that the job doesn't have to stop completely because of the cold and a bit of snow.

That will be adding more fuel to the fire of the anti-Thameslink mob. ;). I am north of the river. All working well. We had the reduced service yesterday.

We've just come to a stand on the fasts north of Thirsk as 185130 has lost its horn function. Can't see that helping matters
