We are. Full credit to GTR it is running very well as well.

WLL a bit iffy but running. Was turfed off at Balham due to points failure...these things happen, but was interesting to see on the PIS they had previously already decided to turn at Selhurst without telling us. Really that needs deciding and communicating prior to leaving Clapham Jn.

How much of this is due to 'snow mode' on the 700's?

None. Southern WLL units are mainly class 377s, and occasionally 455s (for a few operating south of North Pole Jn, aptly named today!).

377s have Ice Mode, which is usually pretty good on days like today. Although I have been known to wonder if the NR power supplies should be upgraded so Ice Mode can be used by default throughout the year, as it cures all manner of train faults, too...

To be fair, they allow for multiple metres of snow. The UK seems to be flummoxed by multiple millimetres, every year!

So what should NR do? Invest in snow equipment that is likely to be used once in a blue moon?

Does anyone know what the latest is around Drem/Dunbar? I heard points were frozen at Dunbar but no detail about what position they were frozen in.

1V62 is in the loop at Drem; is there an issue with that train or is it waiting due to a problem with the line?

SR(SE) did that in the 70's spent millions on a snow blower, then sat in a shed for years until sold off !

Multiple metres, EVERY YEAR for about 3 or 4 months of the year ! mind you in 2016 there was multiple metres in North America, and the system shut for days on end !

Just had a text from ScotRail advising that they are starting to withdraw services and that nothing will run from 1800 tonight to 1000 tomorrow.

An interesting excursion with Grand Central this morning on 1N90 (0803 Kings Cross 1138 Sunderland). It arrived York 69 late and after Northallerton stopped at Darlington for Eaglescliffe and Hartlepool passengers. Then non-stop via Durham, skirting Gateshead and approaching Sunderland from the north, arriving 64 late.

The return working was announced as following the same route

My point exactly. I relay that story over & over when rare weather events such as this occur.

They could put it to a public vote, making clear that the cost of buying and maintaining it would mean a "snow equipment surcharge" being added to fares.

The complaints would disappear faster than you can say "that was quick".

Looks like 1V62 is fine but being held due to the points issue. From XC Journey Check

11:00 Glasgow Central to Penzance due 22:41 will be terminated at Birmingham New Street.
It will no longer call at Cheltenham Spa, Bristol Parkway, Bristol Temple Meads, Taunton, Tiverton Parkway, Exeter St Davids, Newton Abbot, Totnes, Plymouth, Liskeard, Bodmin Parkway, Lostwithiel, Par, St Austell, Truro, Redruth, Camborne, Hayle, St Erth and Penzance.
It has been previously delayed, is being further delayed between Edinburgh and Berwick-Upon-Tweed and is now expected to be 145 minutes late.
This is due to a points failure.

Further Information
Passengers on the train terminating at Birmingham, please change for the next available service. Ticket acceptance is in place with Great Western Rail for servcies between Bristol Temple Meads and Penzance.
Passengers at stations between Birmingham New Street and Exeter St Davids, please board the additional 17:12 service from Birmingham. Change at Exeter for Great Western Railway services.

Most of the trouble seems to be points failures. For starters I would make sure that point heaters etc are fully functional before the snow starts to fall.

They do. NR sent out many teams yesterday before the snow started falling to inspect point heaters. They also have teams of snowmen who go out and try and sort any issues that come up.

However even point heaters can get overwhelmed with enough snow and given the very low temperatures, this can affect the lubrication and contribute to points failures....can also affect the wires to mechanically operated points.

I've always puzzled why they don't have Dutch barn type structures over junctions particularly remote ones. Such buildings as well as keeping the weather off points and staff could have infra red heaters directed at the track.

1v62 1100 Glasgow - Penzance seems to be stuck near Widdrington. Anyone got any ideas? That train is now well over 3 hours late

The disruption should only last a couple more days, at least south of Scotland. Friday is the last very cold day with snow, then temperatures slowly regress back to nearer normal over the weekend and into next week.
