Like a few countries the Germans love getting as many pipes on an engine as will fit.

My former boss' Dad was a steam engine driver for Deutsche Reichsbahn during WWII and later Deutsche Bundesbahn. Needless to say, he wouldn't say what sort of trains he drove in WWII
