Random question:

For some R&D work we are doing, we are looking for a location with the following parameters:
  • Gradual curve
  • Lots of container / flat-bed traffic
  • Clear view of the tracks available from outside NR land
Our initial test site is here:

But we are looking for similar sites that are, ideally, closer to Bristol, since it takes a long time for us to reach this location.

Any ideas...?

Chepstow almost anywhere along the line although Tesco car park would or under the Severn Bridge would be easiest

Somewhere like thins @Nick Ashwell ?

It's hard to tell from the aerial view whether we can see the track from the car-park or not - it depends how thick the trees are, and where the fence line is...but worth a look!

This LC might also be a possibility - but I suspect may not have much freight traffic....

Thanks :)
Severn Tunnel would likely have more traffic as you'll also see trains going through the tunnel, although if ya want a curve Magor would be a better option buy the footbridge.
Exactly that Tesco but with Tesco it depends what you need to see because as you say the line is above the car park and there is vegetation

We may try Pilning station car-park - very straight, but lots of freight on the approach to the tunnel - thanks :)

There are not very many container trains in the Bristol/Cardiff area. If you want more your original site is probably about the closest you can get to intercept the flow of intermodal trains northwards from Southampton, although somewhere further north or south on the same line might be a bit easier to get to by road.

Thanks. We may well end up back on the original line - perhaps on one of the foot LCs where there is quite close access to the line without trees etc. Will let you know!

The footbridge down from Horfield Junction near Lockleaze, quite a popular photo location. Container traffic is quite low though, think it’s only Southampton-Wentloog workings.

(slightly blurred screengrab from one of my photos below)

Also the footbridge (public, not NR) immediately south of Filton Abbey Wood station has a nice curved approach from the south (second image)
