I popped down to the Docks with camera today and snapped these photos of Canute Road crossing, right next to the old South Western House, now flats, and one-time Southampton Terminus station.

http://www.nostalgiaroad.co.uk/canuteroad5.jpg LINE CURVES SHARPLY TO THE LEFT TOWARD CUNARD'S TERMINAL

The other crossing is Chapel Road, near the College, which is almost reached by the carriage sidings from Northam Depot.

http://www.nostalgiaroad.co.uk/chapelroad3.jpg LOOKING NORTH TOWARDS NORTHAM JUNCTION. There was at one time a curve to the left and junction near St Mary's Street bridge.

I have seen Clan Line, 73s, and various 66s at these crossings over the years.

When the Cunard trains run into the ED, they stop SB at the signal just before Canute Road awaiting the crossing guys. Amazing to get so close to diesel and steam locos! If you go to http://www.flashearth.com/

then go to Latitude 50 53 52 North
Longtitude 1 23 52 West

you will get the Ocean Liner Terminal and there are two trains! You can see how the branch works in the Docks. If you go to the Western Docks there are several trains there as well.

Passed by Western Docks branch this afternoon from Ashurst NF. There was a Ford train, headed by a EWS 66 at the head, and it ran onto the goods line. Eventually stopped before the points with the mains. However when we went back towards Salisbury on the FGW, there was another 66 at t'other end! Is this doe so that the vehicle trains can reverse back towards the Test Valley Line? Or does the rear 66 stay on for logistical reasons?

Yes this working 6Z23 Southampton Western Docks - Bescot is top'n'tailed out of Western Docks by a loco from Eastleigh, and the loco which came off an earlier intermodel which stays at the docks. It is hauled by the intermodel loco out into Soton Goods Loop, where it is detached, and then the actual loco hauls it out past Maritime to go up the Test Valley line, with the intermodel loco returning to Eastleigh, or hauling another intermodel north. It is done to turn the cars so they can be driven off the right way at Bescot, and is quicker and easier than running round at the Goods Loop.

Cheers T2...can you add anything about the Freightliners that load/unload round the bend bfore the old P&O Cruise Terminal?

If anyone is interested, the information I have is that the AC-Delco Plant as was, now for a few more weeks only WIX-Filtration, was last rail-connected by 1970. If you go down there you can see remnants of the sidings that went into the Crane Bay that were installed in 1938 when the building was erected.

These were taken in February: note the exit from the Docks and also the line that used to branch off to the right and run along the north side of the Plant..I think it ran to the Post Office premises which are now just a Parcel Force Depot. The siding into the former Crane Bay can just be seen in the tarmac.

Here is a blow-up of the siding off the main reception that leads to the vehicle compond

And here is a view from 1956 showing the siding and another that I think ran along the north wall to the coal store for the steam boiler. I have just noticed that the small Docks Shed turntable is also visible.

[EDIT]
The 6Z23 we just passed at about 1424..66167 I think it was at the Soton end.
I think that the vehicle yard siding may have been o/s at the time but it is certainly being used now!

Yeah theres usually around 6 or 7 EWS intermodels a day in and out of the docks, they just go in there, run round and wait to be unloaded. GBRf also run the Gypsum train in and out in the afternoon/evening, and there are also 2 stone trains, one EWS and one FL.

Somehow we've wondered onto Western Docks yet the title of this thread is Eastern Docks!

I took a trip into Eastern docks the other - drove straight through the open security gates and straight to the end where the QE2 terminal, took a photo of the blue covered car carriers and went home again.
Will post a pic when I get home later on....................
Ive always thought Eastern docks would make a good model railway layout............!!!!!!!!!!!!
