They’ve been advertising a lot for train movements apprentice/Shunter drivers recently. I’m currently going through the process from a recruitment drive last month.

What’s the recruitment process for SE I can’t seem to find it in the threads? Do they use OPC or do they have a different method ?

If you get past the paper sift they will invite you to the assessment centre in Tonbridge.

They use the standard assessments, to a standard level and you’ll be told on the day if you passed. After that you’ll wait for a date for interview.

24 days annual leave including Bank Holidays? So 16 days holiday...I've never seen a job advertised with such a low leave allowance in the UK plus they say a proportion of your annual leave is rostered!

16 days equates to 4 weeks leave because you’ll be working a 4 day week.

Railway holidays are always rostered, 4 weeks are allocated to certain times of the year. The additional leave can be booked adhoc on a first come first basis

Don’t worry, it says holiday is allocated for this role but it most definitely isn’t when you start there.
Go for it, great job and great depot.

Still, 24 days leave including b/h does seem a bit low, can any driver from SE confirm?

From my home is 40 mins exactly on off pick it is about 15 miles driving, but the pick is a bit more. example 05 am or 06 am in the morning or late evening but other times sometimes more.

If you don't mind the drive every day, then I would say apply.

Again, I’ll put it out to SE staff who would know for definite.
I’m sure the 24 days is excluding b/h?

I can confirm as a CURRENT shunter driver for Southeastern.

It is 24 days leave. You work bank holidays, all holidays apart from Christmas day when the depot closes.

Double pay is only on boxing Day

And your leave Is not allocated to you, however you are asked if you could book a week for each season, winter, autumn, summer, spring.

But if you have other plans. For instance a 2/3 week holiday in summer. And no one has booked those dates. Then they will authorise it. I went to America in 2019 and I had almost 3 weeks off in July. No issues at all

You have a train driving license yes. But you ain't licensed to carry passengers.

You can shunt via the mainline depending on depot location. I know Grove Park do sometimes have mainline shunts (pick up the train from the station and drive it to the depot)
Do they give u a train licence after completing your shunter training?

Plenty of mainline shunts at Grove Park. No pick ups from the platform but from one yard to another via the mainline/Hither Green station.

There you go then. I'm guessing DA1 Is a Grove Park shunter. So he will have better knowledge of Grove Park than me. I'm based at a different depot

Used to be but made the internal move mainline.

Just a heads up to others, there are definitely live vacancies and potentially more as I know a few others leaving to go the same path.

Great job so go and apply.

It's not for Southeastern, but I've got an interview coming up for the role of Shunter shortly.

Apologies if this is hijacking the thread, as it isn't my intention, but is there anybody who is either currently a shunter, or has previously sat a shunter interview/assessment?

I've previously passed the interview for trainee train driver and am in a pool, however I thought I'd go for Shunter too as it'll increase my chances of securing a railway job (I hope). Would the interview likely consist of the same competency questions? I know a lot of the role will largely be the same, e.g. heavily safety focused with a lot of emphasis on rules and regulations obviously.

Also any additional comments on what it's actually like working this role would be appreciated, even if it's over PM! I plan to visit the depot soon to gather more information, just thought I'd ask here too. Thanks!
