Can anybody tell me why the Wallside sidings and Platform 1 at Southport have an inspection pit under it?

Its always seemed unusual to me. Its clearly not there because of anything Merseyrail do, so it goes back before the 507/508 use.

Near where the 3 ridings meet
I think that there was a shed in that area in the 1850's.
Used for servicing the Steam locos in use on the Liverpool line after the terminal station had been moved from Tithebarn st to Chapel st.
John Gahan's book may give more info. Seaport to Seaside ISBN 0 907768 07 5

Shed 27C was the opposite side of the station on the line towards Preston, now only Wigan of course.

This is on the western side of the station where the Merseyrail trains stable.
