I don't know why they didn't bite the bullet and go for something bigger and completely close Staines and Strawberry Hill depots.
Looking at the planning decision notice I think there would have been issues with anything larger.

Get it open at its current planned size, wait for things to settle down then enlarge later.

Agreed. Atkins did a good job to get it through first time given the high number of objections so there must have been a lot of pre-application work undertaken.

Not strictly related, but does anyone know why the section of track between Eastleigh station and the Arriva depot appears to be in the process of having it’s 3rd rail reinstalled?

Nope that’s completely segregated. It appears one of the 2 roads from the Arlington spur underneath Campbell road and into the depot will go live.

Only reason I ask is that the juice was removed about 18 months.

Lots of progress being made with the new depot at Feltham. Completion is scheduled for next Summer. At this rate it'll be complete before the first 701 is delivered.

At this rate I’ll start and finish a three volume fantasy novel before the first 701 is delivered

Think we already new this but may be of interest

This means adapting to changing customer needs and expectations, and investing in
our network. The timetable changes we introduced in May, and the ones we’re now planning for December,
are bringing in more services aimed
at making things better for our customers. So too are the new trains we’re introducing, including the brand- new Class 701 trains that’ll run on some of our busiest routes from next year.
As the timetable changes and new trains bring in more services, we need to make sure our infrastructure’s capable of supporting the expansion and we’ve six big projects doing
just that – at Feltham, Basingstoke, Wimbledon, Woking, Fratton and Farnham. A total investment of just
over £100m.
Two of these,
Wimbledon
and Woking are
now complete.
At Wimbledon
depot we’ve just
completed a substantial project to extend the sheds to cope with extra demand. At Woking we’ve increased capacity by electrifying sidings previously used for engineering so they’re now capable of stabling our trains. At Fratton, Basingstoke and Farnham we’re building new sidings and expanding our depot and siding facilities. This is scheduled to complete during 2020, as is our largest infrastructure project at Feltham.
Work to build a new train care depot
at Feltham is well underway. It’s being constructed on the site of the old goods marshalling yard just north of Feltham station and will have capacity to service
Artist impression of Feltham Depot.
10 trains at a time – perfect for our Class 701 fleet. This is a substantial project, comprising of £50m investment that includes new track, new power system and a new accommodation block for colleagues working there. The site’s currently being cleared with plans to connect it to the mainline, including new points and signalling, scheduled for October. Construction of the sidings and accommodation will follow this. We’ll keep you updated on progress.
These projects are great examples of our commitment to improving customer service and to growing our business. We’ll be investing £1.2bn in total during the life of the franchise, helping to create a network we can all be proud of.

In terms of previous questions, what is the difference between a drives and guards facilty? Are they different species?
Surely all that is needed is a staff facility for all who work there.

I think in this context they may not need a guards depot, because the trains will always enter/leave passenger service somewhere else, and that may be an easier place for the guard to get on or off the train. Or put another way the guards will work from their existing depot or signing on point.

Over the last 3 weeks while there has been a possesion through Feltham a new long siding has been laid extending the Grid siding under the Harlington Road West bridge and then about twice that distance towards Feltham Junction.

Fratton has had all the track between the fuel tanks and the shunters cabin/back of B&Q pulled up, as well as the head shunt at Fratton east.

still no news on Eastleigh.

The plans show a reception siding alongside the depot and new mainline crossover London end of the depot.

All plans are available on the hounslow planning website.

I’d just add that I posted the planning application number earlier in the thread, to save anyone having to search for it, it is: 00553/F/PA3
The overall length of the track alterations is well over 800 metres. Unfortunately the relevant drawing pdf is too large to upload to the forum as an attachment.

Is there a separate thread for discussion about the depot they are building East of Feltham, or is it all in this thread?

It's looking quite busy at the moment. Lots of ballast is down and there is a short spur for temporary rail access, but none of the roads have been built.

Although a large quantity of sleepers have recently been delivered.

The sleepers have been there for months, they were delivered shortly after the access line was laid and connected to the running lines. They were onsite before the ballast.

I'm not talking about the few already there. I'm referring to the pile delivered a few weeks ago and are stacked in clear view of the railway.

The stacks of concrete sleepers in clear view from passing trains have been there since before Christmas.
