Hi all,

Just a quick question, earlier we were on a 158 to Soton and kept seeing these speed limits that looked something like:

SP
60

Usually these signs might have 'HST' or '170' or certain unit numbers, but I can't think what SP means :? There was no other speed limit numbers below or above, just that...

cheers,

James.

SP = Sprinters (15x). It means they can travel at that speed as opposed to the normal line speed.

On a related note, are 170s allowed to travel at SP speeds as well as HST speeds?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe 170s run at the HST limits(where applicable and not the 125mph due to the fact they max out at 100mph)

Hope that helped

Yes, Cl168-171 can travel at HST speeds up to the unit's maximum of 100mph. So if a sign read...

80
--
HST
125

...these units could go at 100mph.

They are also included in the SP category, as stated above.

HST = class 91 locomotive with mark 4 vehicles and DVT,168/170/171/175/180/220/221/222/253/254/373/390
MU = Multiple unit trains
DMU = Diesel multiple unit trains
EMU = Electric multiple unit trains
SP = class 150/153/155/156/158/159/165/166/168/170/171
CS = Class 67 locomotive hauled trains
At locations where both HST and SP speeds apply, classes 168/170/171 may run at the higher of the two speeds.
Class 185 trains must not run at any MU or DMU speeds.

There is also "EPS" now on the WCML. "Enhanced Passenger Speed" which is a posh way of saying anything that tilts. A Pendolino and, i presume, 221's.

TASS has only been removed from XC class 221s.

EPS stands for Enhanced Permissable Speed. Yes class 221s can travel at EPS speeds.

The differential speed boards never show a number to indicate a class/type of train that can use a differential speed incase its read as a being a speed.

I stand corrected on that one. On our side we don't take much notice of the EPS boards, the only time one of our trains tilts is when an overweight passenger (or staff member!) steps on! :D

You also have MU speeds on Birmingham New Street to Birmingham International there is an MU110 this I imagine will only be for the voyagers that in fact cannot run at HST speeds:roll:

That speed appiles from Stechford to Marston Green, its 100/110MU/110EPS. Voyagers can run at HST speeds, and EPS if they are the WC ones.
