Hi all,

Please could somebody tell me any of the speed limits for Carlisle to Preston via the S&C line? (Basically the whole VT diversionary route)

Thanks for any help.

Dam emergency engineering works.. why doesn't that ever happen on the WCML at weekends between Preston & Carlisle, when the S&C is open ;) ?

Hence why its been upgraded! :)
It has not been upgraded for a very long time. On the contrary, it's been downgraded.

The highest known top speed appears to be 80mph (1960 sectional appendix shows this).

It is now only 60mph, but there are dozens of TSRs that prevent line speed being attained at present.

The line was not even upgraded a few years ago - it was just given some essential renewals that were not up to the job.

The current works are just emergency renewals and repairs.

No upgrade is planned, it's just a case of patching it up I'm afraid. :(

I know, that's why I'm interested in the actual linespeed of the section, not TSRs. Another reason, is because MSTS shows the line as having 2 prety big 105 mph sections at both the Carlisle & Settle ends of the line, with an 80 mph limit for the majority of the line in the middle.

The MSTS route seems to be set in the days of steam, when linespeed most probably was higher than 60mph (not 105mph though!) - however, to then include something that looks vaguely similar to the modern day track layout at Carlisle does tend to suggest a slight lack of research!

It does confuse me a bit about the layout at Carlisle TBH
