I'm doing Sheffield or Chesterfield to Coventry tomorrow (still undecided where I'm starting). I managed to find a cheap couple of Advance singles from Derby to Coventry and vice versa. And plan to grab a day return to Derby to complete my path.

Right then. I do know I'm tied to what train is on the ticket between DBY & COV & VV. The bit I'm not sure about is that the return journey from COV to DBY looks to be a train carrying on to Chesterfield and/or Sheffield. Is it still OK for me to stay on the train, provided of course I possess all the tickets I mention? Or must I get off at Derby, just to wait for next train north, because Advance tickets are strictly only valid between the origin and destination shown?

For the Advance ticket bit of the journey you must travel on the train you are booked on.

For the Day Return element of your journey you can travel on any train (subject to any time restrictions, which will not apply on a Sunday). There is no requirement for you to get off a train and catch another just because you are splitting tickets.

There is no reason why you cannot therefore remain on the same train, provided it adheres to the above.

No need to alight at Derby as both tickets are valid *at* Derby.
