I regularly buy split tickets for my train journeys as it works out alot cheaper than the advertised prices on the internet. Now i've found a website that finds split tickets for you. www.splitfare.co.uk. I bought a edinburgh to leeds ticket for £31.40 and it was £75.60 on trainline and national rail websites.

definitely worth looking at this website before you book your next tickets.

It's a great step forward, but it's certainly not as effective as it could be. Using Hull-Birmingham as an example:

To be honest, I find both a bit patchy on searches I have tried. Better than nowt, but not as good as some of the experts on this board.

Is it that it's limited to one split? If you try Sheffield to Birmingham using the same trains as your Hull to Birmingham journey it does give a split at Derby.

Anyone worked out what the asterisks next to the stations mean yet? I did an enquiry on Aberdeen to Kyle of Lochalsh and got:

The fare is split at Inverness and you change trains there - but what about all the other places with asterisks?

I'm also struggling to find any other website that thinks there is a 13:26 departue from Kyle.

As it says, * means a change of leg - i.e. a station where you change trains.

The system is limited to dealing with only one split and doesn't seem to fully understand tickets restricted by time as shown above.

I think they might be request stops, although it's a bit silly using asterisks for both. Or maybe the Kyle Line has been upgraded to 24tph ATO and doubled in the last week or so which would explain how it's possible to change that much and keep to time...

Could be a bus replacing a train? Won't be request stop; there's more than one of these on the Kyle line.

NRE shows it (outbound at least) as a two-leg journey, changing at Inverness. The others are shown as request stops.

Of course the problem with thse sites is that that they only split a journey once, which is fairly easy to program, the problem comes with multiple splits & multiple routes - a much more powerful program is needed for this.

I have split my journey for when i head up to London for the tube challenge on 23rd july, even with the advance fares the total cost from Bridgend to London would have been £40.00.

However by doing what i have done below i have managed to save my self a bit of money.

21:00 Bridgend - Cardiff Central (Arr 21:22) - £3.90
21:30 Cardiff Central- Bristol TM (Arr 22:22) - £2.65
23:30 Bristol TM - Taunton ( Arr 00:30) - £2.00
02:30 Taunton - London Paddington ( Arr 05:30) - £14.50
21:15 London Paddington - Bridgend (Arr 23:59) -£7.90

Total cost £29.00 compared to £40.00 so thats a saving of £11.00

I tried a few journeys I intend to make soon -
splityourticket managed 5 splits on the simple Newcastle-London journey (and returned about 30% reduction!) whereas splitfare (which does seem to be limited to one split) couldn't find a reduction.
But the downside of splityourticket is that it didn't even recognise 2 of my intended journeys ! - Newcastle to Slough and Newcastle to Leicester.

Based on this (very limited) review, one site tries multiple splits but can't find some routes (perhaps its the cross-London link that fails), while the other only tries with a single split but can find more routes?
Both useful, in their own ways.
