I've bought a split ticket for a table of 4 people and the reservations are such that we have to move carriages twice (same train throughout) for a 5 hour XC journey.

Alternatively the ticket office at the station may be able to offer a through reservation provided you produce a valid combination of tickets for the whole journey.

How likely is it that a ticket office will do this?

If you have Twitter then you can reserve seats by contacting Crosscountry on Twitter.

Are they Advance tickets or Anytime/Off peak tickets?

If it's Advance tickets, I'd advise you to contact CrossCountry - they don't have any ticket offices so it'll be over the phone or online.

If it's walkup tickets, that can be done at a ticket office if there is a table available for the whole journey, which isn't guaranteed.
