On Thursday January 14th at 12.30 Bristol Libraries are hosting a free online talk "The SS Great Britain: the Concorde of her Day"

About this Event

‘The SS Great Britain: the Concorde of her Day’
The SS Great Britain was, like Concorde, at the cutting edge of technology and one of the most prestigious ways to cross the Atlantic.
In this online lecture, SS Great Britain volunteer and guide Philip Unwin will talk about the reason for the conception of the ship, which was built here in Bristol in the very dock in which she is preserved today.
He will also outline the four phases of her life, namely the Transatlantic Liner, the Emigrant Ship to Australia, the cargo ship to San Francisco and her abandonment in the Falkland Islands from whence she was salvaged and returned to Bristol in 1970.
Biography
Philip Unwin retired from the Royal Navy in 1996, after a career which included ship command, and moved to the Bristol area when he was appointed Deputy Naval Regional Officer, Wales and West of England. He retired for the second time in 2006 and became involved in the SS Great Britain Trust the following year, becoming a Guide and External Speaker for the Trust in 2008.
