In terms of Dundee Road West didn't Strathtay/Stagecoach run the 75 that way to Ethiebeaton Park too?, what was the route(s) for the 73 in the 80s/90s as Blackscroft by pass wasn't there at that time? Did the Arbroath/Montrose buses operate via Commercial Street-Victoria Road/Street to Strathern Road? Happily to be corrected :)

I do have a vague recollection of that, I think it went a circuitous way around Menzieshill before reaching Ninewells. There was also the even more circuitous 69, which was replaced by the tendered 204 and 206 in 2011.

This iteration will actually be the fourth 74, there was a further attempt at a competitor to NatEx Dundee (as Travel Dundee became) in circa 2014(?) – half hourly daytime only from Broughty Ferry town centre to Dundee High Street, sank without a trace after a year or so as it basically followed the 5's route but at 1/3 of the frequency.

Wasn't that the X5? Or the earlier one from them was the 9X/10X if it was that maybe?

The X5 went via East Dock Street (sure the 9X/10X did this too).

From memory, what I knew as the high road buses (Dundee Arbroath directs, 39/40x rings a bell) went up Commercial Street, turned up to the stops at the back of the Wellgate Centre, then along Victoria Street then Arbroath Road then out the A92 through Muirdrum and onto Arbroath.

Low Road buses (73s i.e. Carnoustie) went the same way but then cut down to Strathearn Road via Craigie Ave. That would be late 90s early 2000's

I think you could be right (again I never used the services but seen the buses), thats an old number too 40x!, I do remember them heading via the Wellgate (in an odd way I do wonder why they pulled the Arbroath 39/40x from Commercial Street as it generally serves Seagate now, its only the 20/21/22 on Commercial Street (22 Glamis not Craigowl lol)

As for the 73s that will make sense too.

Yes, I think the current 73 route out of the city centre dates from the construction of the ski-slope on Blackscroft.
Before pedestrianisation of the city centre in 1993 the route was up Reform Street and round the top of Albert Square.
Going back to 1986, almost all services used Dundee Road West. Only the 77 was routed along Strathern Road. Over time more services were shifted that way, which makes sense as there's far more potential traffic along that road.

I have vague recollections of a 40, with various letters including “E” (which I assume was “evening” and possibly subsidised?).

It took an unusual route, coming along Dundee Road then cutting up onto Craigie Avenue (towards Arbroath Road) at the Stannergate Roundabout.

The X5 did go via East Dock Street. It was all-stops to the orphanage, then non-stop to the Seagate.

The 9X/10X also went that way, but their last stop before the city centre was Craigie Drive, before cutting down to Broughty Ferry Road via the Stannergate Roundabout.

Not to go too far off-topic, but when NatEx introduced their wholesale changes around 2010 they had the 5A and 5B. The former went more or less the route of the current 5 while the latter used Dundee Road, then from the city centre to Ninewells it went via Riverside Avenue. Not surprisingly, it wasn’t long before that was binned and the single 5 emerged.

It’s odd in terms of the strathtay numbers but looking on Flickr it’s weird seeing them ie 75 and even to a place called Ferryden (do any go there now?)

I vaguely remember the 5A/B but I do remember NX running their buses at the A & E area of Ninewells (or close to it), as was it not that long after a double deck got hit round that area too (NX)

That's all but two Glenrothes 9700DDs in service on the X24 between St Andrews and Glasgow now.

50531
50532
50533
50534
50536
50539, 540, and 542 are currently at Aberhill, hearing some rumors that 539 may go into service this week, although, also hearing rumors that it won't.

Best buses they have ever got for these services, well impressed with them, Drivers approve too from the few I know that work the service regularly, long overdue
Look forward to trying them out. Only sampled a Megabus example so far and they are pretty quiet, step up from even a Plaxton Panorama.

I was able to sample 50534 today between Forth Valley and Dunfermline and I'd have to agree - a massive upgrade. Smooth, comfortable, quiet, a much-needed increase in capacity and a welcome improvement in accessibility thanks to the low floor of the lower deck. I heard several passengers remarking on the vehicle as well. Good riddance to the Plaxton Elites, that's what I say!

Presumably the centre door is only used when a wheelchair user presents themselves?

Out of interest Route One has a review of 50531 (SF74 YNS).

I assume the 2 not in service at Glenrothes are 50535/7?

Exciting to hear - I’m gonna have to go up to Fife to try them out soon.

Is the X24 going all volvo or will the X27 get them too?
50531-7 are for Glenrothes then 50538-43 are for Aberhill from what I’ve gathered.

Correct, it's only to be used for wheelchairs and as an emergency exit. What's interesting is how Leven Bus Station will be handled, as the council have refused to shift the stance allocation for the X27 to Stance 1, so any wheelchair getting on/off would have to officially get themselves onto the concourse to board the bus on stance 2. However, there is no fold out ramp in the luggage hold like on Panorama's, so how do they get down from the curb?

Shouldn't be a massive issue in practise as very few people board or alight at Leven, and in Kirkcaldy they are apparently planning to reallocate the X27 and late night arrivals of the X24A to Stance 9, and remove a section of the railing.

According to bustimes, Arbroath 11531 has been repainted into the new navy Stagecoach “we’ve got you” livery... This makes me wonder, will the E400EVs arrive in that?

50542 entered service and is running the X27 not tracking.
