Rochdale is on the Calder Valley Line, which runs from Manchester Victoria and Blackpool North to York and Selby. The first station after the junction where the two westerly branches join together is Hebden Bridge.
Gipsy Hill was also opened by the West End of London and Crystal Palace Railway in 1856 and served by services of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway.
Ealing Broadway is one of a few termini for the London Underground's District line since 1879. Until 1885, it used to travel further to Windsor & Eton Central, serving several GWR stations along the way. This, however, was short-lived due to unpopular demand.
The brick-built single-storey main building has a ticket office and waiting room and is on the up platform. The down platform has a matching waiting shelter. Both buildings are Italianate, designed by Brunel for the GWR and are listed Grade II*. They are the only substantially intact survivors of this once-common design, although a much modified example exists at Chepstow.
