When Walton-on-Thames was opened in 1838, it was one of the first stations on the South Western Main Line, which linked Nine Elms with Woking. Another current station on that route is Byfleet & New Haw, although it did not open until 1927.

When Dumpton Park Station was first built there was a booking hall at street level, a smaller version of the one currently at Broadstairs station, and the bridge and steps were covered. The building has since been demolished and the covering removed, probably in the 1970s, but no date seems to be available.

Upon it's opening, the Earl of Arundel created a decree that all passenger services passing through Arundel station must stop, and this must remain in place for 150 years from this date. When this expired in 2013, trains began running fast from Barnham to Horsham, skipping all stations including Arundel.

The station was constructed as part of the Lancaster and Carlisle in 1847, and is now part of the West Coast Main Line. Apart from the stations at each end, the only other surviving original station on this route and part of the West Coast Main Line is at Penrith.

The Arun Valley line, also known as the Mid Sussex Line, leaves the Brighton Main Line at a junction south of Three Bridges, runs via Crawley, Christ's Hospital, Amberley and Arundel before meeting the West Coastway Line at Arundel Junction.
