Ystrad Mynach railway station was used as a location in the pilot episode of Porridge (Prisoner and Escort), starring Ronnie Barker. Strangely, their journey began at London St Pancras!

The Midland Railway replaced the main station buildings on platform 1 between 1895 and 1898 with a new booking hall, booking office, parcels office and refreshment room. These current buildings may be by Charles Trubshaw, who was the Midland Railway's Chief Architect at that time. Another station that he did work on prior to then is Bingley, which was designed by him in 1892.
