The paper I was sent about 2 months ago says the following.

507020,028, 508103/110 are priority classified mileage units and need to be kept spare or put on the lowest mileage diagrams - no weekends

508108, 114,134,136,139 also priority classified mileage and to be kept spare at weekends. 134 has 1700 overhaul miles left and will stop at 250. To be kept on Southports only and stabled after peak.

Like I say this was a couple of months ago now, probably November

Aren't the 508s owned by Angel Trains? I'd have thought it would be the responsibility of the RoSCO to maintain their trains in accordance with their contract with the operator - and to foot the bill, rather than the operator. Is it usual for the operator to pay for maintenance / overhaul, or is this instance an exception, and if so why? Thanks

It depends on the lease. Many fleets are on what is known as a “dry lease” where the operator is responsible for all maintenance. I don’t know what the situation is with the 507/508 fleet but would guess they are dry lease - otherwise the operator would keep using them and the ROSCO would pick up the heavy maintenance bill.

Certainly, the contract will be different from operator to operator, when this lease was signed I think Angel knew the trains didn't have a long future left.

It appears that they have stopped C4 overhauls of the 507/8 fleet, which would make 508125 the final beneficiary.

Does anyone know what 508134's last passenger working was please, i.e. before the tour?

Have you heard any update on this in recent months/weeks?
508134 has been withdrawn now, are any of the other units you mention above likely to be at risk of the same fate quite soon?
Have you heard of anymore units which may have been added to this list?

Not heard anything lately but I can ask around. Worth noting a number of units have been overhauled/had an exam recently, plenty running around with shiney cab ends and fresh black bogies / camshaft covers etc. Not sure what level of exam they've had though!

Some units appear to have been temporarily stored during the reduced timetable. For example, 507015 and 508131 have been stabled at New Brighton for a while. I know 507015 is relatively low on remaining miles and I think 508131 is not too far behind it, so I suspect other units not mentioned on the endangered list will also be seeing little use, e.g. 507010, 508104, 508112 and 508140.

As for the endangered list (507020/028, 508103/108/110/114/136/139), the only two I've seen in use since the lockdown timetable started are 507020 and 508139. Has anyone seen any of the others about lately?

507028 has had its C4 and is fine now. 508112 is having its C3 now.

508139 has been at Southport since the end of March.

In terms of “endangered” units they are being managed so they don’t go the same way as 508134, before the 777’s come in. Every unit has an overhaul mileage limit.

508114 and 508103 have been stabled in the sidings at West Kirby since at least 27th March and 508110 was being stored in the wall sidings at Southport station for near two weeks.
I also reported 508136 and 508108 being stored at Southport towards the end of March.
There seems to be a 6 car set at Hooton for the past few days, anyone any idea what units these are? and additional units in the other siding at West Kirby?

With being kept spare so long, its mileage has now been managed that it can return to normal use.

508110 featured on TV last week in the soap drama, Hollyoaks. I myself do not watch this show but was aware of the filming which took place at Southport station (rebranded Chester North for the show) at the beginning of February.

In the episode, there were scenes filmed both on the platform and on the train. The British Transport Police were also involved in the scene. All Merseyrail branding was covered over in the scene, including on station signage and also part of the livery on the side of the train.

If I remember correctly when the filming took place, 110 worked ECS to Sandhills and back to Southport in order to film the scene on board the train.

The show from 14th April is still online on the channel 4 website for those interested.

508110 noted today I believe heading back through the stock interchange. I saw another freshly exam'd 508 yesterday on the Wirral line, didn't quite catch the number but it was either 112 or 122. Presume 112 as it had been mentioned earlier as being off for a exam.

508110 has been on the Ellesmere Port line all day.

508112 is still undergoing overhaul won’t be around for a while.

You wouldn’t know if a unit is fresh of exam, more likely a unit fresh off overhaul, all “new looking” underneath and a front end repaint.

Besides 507028 and 508112, what other units have recently received an overhaul (or are planned to)?
Last ones I noted before lockdown were 507033 and 508125 (at the start of this year).
There was a unit running on the Ormskirk line on Wednesday which even from a distance was clear it was fresh from overhaul, could this be 028?

508110 out today on the Chester line which I assume will be a high mileage diagram.

Does anyone know what units are currently being stored in Sidings 1 (showing as 0S00) and Sidings 2 (showing as 5X07) at New Brighton? Are there are units being stored in the Wall siding?
Also any idea what unit has joined 114 in sidings 2 at West Kirby?

As of last night, 507007 and 507015 are in siding number 1 and 508131 is in the wall siding. 507007 joined the other two around three weeks ago. Not sure on West Kirby but it's on my list to cycle to soon.

It’s still 508103 at West Kirby With 508114.

507015 has now been moved.

Did 103 move from West Kirby yesterday though and returned again today (as 5X03)?
So there is now only a 3 car in siding 1 (507007) at New Brighton and 508131 in the wall siding?

Just a brief update: on Wednesday 6th May, it was still 507010, 508103 and 508114 stabled at West Kirby. By Saturday evening, 09/05, the sidings at New Brighton were clear of units.

Thanks for the update. There seems to be quite a few units fresh from overhaul over the past few weeks (from pictures I have seen) including 508137 and 507028.
Any sightings of 508104, 508120 or 508143 recently?

I think 508103 is now back in service after being not used much over the past month or so.
What is the situation with 508114, any plans to run this in service again anytime soon?
