Just wondering what the future of the current Moorgate-Stevenage (via Welwyn & Hertford) are? For me this seems an excellent set of services to divert onto Crossrail 2/ Crossrail 3, so freeing up capacity on the ECML.

Well seeing as neither the proposed Crossrail 2 or the asperational Crossrail 3 go anywhere near Moorgate - Stevenage I suspect the plan is for them to continue very much as they have previously.

Crossrail 2 goes to Kings Cross & Essex Road, easy enough to connect it. It's also connected to Thameslink, although personally I think the attempt to combine urban & long-distance services through the Thameslink core is going to be disastrous.

Diminishing the Finsbury Park-Moorgate to just 2tph then? Thameslink is already taking away half of its services - IIRC the Welwyn GC terminators are running through St Pancras et al.

The proposed Welwyn services on the ECML > Thameslink are new. Moorgate will retain the same number of services as now. Also the Stevenage / Hertford > Moorgate services don't really affect ECML capacity, as they avoid the key pinchpoints (Welwyn viaduct / tunnels and Kings Cross)

Really? That's great news if so (maybe we should just see how the whole thing progresses first ). Thinking it through though the whole idea in the OP may be getting a little bit ahead of itself.

Likely peak inner service spec is 10 off the Hertford Loop to Moorgate, and 6 from WGC, split 2 Moorgate, 2 to KX and 2 through Thameslink. Although this may change depending what the franchise bidders come up with.

The only change I could see is one or two services terminating at Gordon Hill throughout the day as well as maybe a second service north of Hertford North throughout the day.

This would allow a metro turn up and go operation to be in place between Gordon Hill and Moorgate as well as improve the existing service between Stevenage and Hertford North.

Not necessarily, if the Crossrail 2 Regional Option is changed to allow a connection above ground at Ally Pally and used any spare capacity on the Hertford Loop, which is the only place it'd come anywhere near to Stevenage-Moorgate.

However, the London and SE RUS (the most recent official scheme AFAICS) was quite clear on there being 4 tph from WGC to Thameslink, and 2 tph to Moorgate, giving a total of 12 tph into Moorgate with the 10 tph off the Hertford Loop.

I was going off the timetable spec that will be in the new franchise. Although this will almost certainly change.
