My daughter and her boyfriend are going to the NEC on Saturday. Aim to leave Stevenage 8/9am and then leave Birmingham International 4/5pm. Both have YP railcards.
I can see Advances on the Eastcoast site with a total cost of £56.80 but are there any splits or cheaper options available, given the reasonably short notice? Grateful for any ideas.

There is a £55.90 for an off peak return splitting at Rugby (your train would have to call there though) via London

Stevenage - Kings Cross
£13.20 CDR

Kings Cross - Euston
£0.00 Walk :p

Euston - Birmingham International
£26.40 Super Off Peak Return (Rte: London Midland only)
£61.50 SVR (Rte: Any Permitted)

The London Midland service is about an hour longer in each direction.

Total: £39.60 for both of them (luckily it's double sonic's total!)

If they want to do something in Birmingham beforehand a ticket to Birmingham New Street is the same price (as is a LM only ticket to any station in the NWM area but break of journey is forbidden on the outbound leg)

Wow, there are some big savings there. Thank you!

Typically London Midland only fares do undercut Any Permitted by a significant portion. The cost comes in terms of time, it'll take about an hour longer in each direction. Would they be ok with that?

If your daughter and her boyfriend are willing to commit to specific trains from London Euston :

0943 London Euston to Birmingham International 1053 Virgin Trains
STD Class Advance £9.90

1720 Birmingham International to London Euston 1834 Virgin Trains
STD Class Advance £9.90

Total cost : £19.80 + £6.60 for the Stevenage - London ticket = £26.40 x 2 = £52.80
