Stock used between Stoke to Derby

I'm building an OO gauge layout and I'd like to run rolling stock that has used the Crewe to Derby line over time. I've got a current EMT class 153 and I know that before that Midland Mainline used 170s on the line. What was used before that? I'm looking at post-privatisation, BR days and LMS stuff. At the moment it's just a Crewe to Derby service but I believe trains used to run as far as Skegness?

Any pointers would be helpful.

Midland Mainline didn't run 170s, CT did (some in exMML livery)

Pretty much any Central Trains stock has run the line so anything in CT livery is appropriate. I can't really go back any further

Nottingham used to be a destination at times after Derby.

In BR days, 3-car Swindon Class 120 DMUs provided the passenger services on the route all the way through the seventies and right up until they were displaced by Sprinterisation.

They were replaced by brand new Provincial liveried class 150/1s, which continued to work the service into the 1990s, although according to this site some loco haulage occured on the route in 1987 to deputise for unavailable Sprinters: http://www.timewarp.abelgratis.com/87/cre-dby87.html

In the nineties, trains have extended beyond Derby to both Skegness and Lincoln. In the summer 1992 timetable, all trains ran through to Nottingham. Additionally, the 06:02 from Crewe ran through to Skegness between Mondays and Fridays, while the 13:28 Crewe - Nottingham started at Llandudno at 11:40 on a Saturday, and was one of only two eastbound trains to feature a trolley service, the other being the 08:15 Crewe - Nottingham. In the opposite direction, the 07:30 Derby - Crewe started at Matlock, and on Saturdays there was an 07:30 Nottingham - Llandudno. The 18:17 Nottingham - Crewe started at Skegness on a Saturday.

When I first knew the line in 1970, BRCW class 104 DMUs shared the route with class 120s. I believe that prior to that class 112/3 Cravens DMUs were used, but they were all withdrawn in 1968/9.

More recently class 156 appeared on the line soon after they were first introduced, and class 158 were farily regular in the 90s too.

When it was Cl.120 cross-country units, a lot ran through Crewe-Derby-Nottingham-Lincoln, and a few ran all the way to Cleethorpes. Painfully slow.

CT used 158's and 170's, and recently i've seen EMT 153's and 158's working it, and Flickr confirms 156's have also worked it.

One of the first DMU workings in North Wales was the fabled Derby-Llandudno, around 1962.
It was the first/only train to average better then 60mph west of Chester.
I couldn't tell you what type it was, but not your common or garden "Derby Lightweight" type.

I recall this DMU it was named the Dragon Rapide,it was around eight coaches joined up, it left Rhyl at 2.19p. on its return journey,my then boss caught it at Chester on the down arriving Rhyl around noon.
It was running in the late fifties, as I awaited news off the 1155 ex Man Ex,the rapide arrived on platform one at about the same time, , indeed it was the first DMU I remember,I recall the station announcer giving the calling points for the rapide.

I was told this train carried the Dragon Rapide name, due to the Aircraft of the same name being used by the four railway Companies when they formed their own Railway air service,pre war plus the DMU passed the De Hav factory at Brouhton near Chester. Hope this helps
