I want to be in Berwick on 28th July by 2pm and will be leaving at around 530pm the same day. Usually to get to Newcastle it's best to split in Manchester and York, I'm presuming this will be the case for Berwick?

I have no railcard and the standard off peak return is £103.10.

Looking at it my only option out of Berwick is the 1815 with a 10 minute connection in York. 2000 arrival 2010 departure which is the last train which will get me back to Manchester in time.

I have to say it never inspires me the though of a cross Pennine TPE cattle truck! With that in mind I thought about going via Carlisle but the return meant going via Edinburgh even though it gets back only 8 minutes later.

Thanks for that, I'd got it down to £81 with advances splitting at Manchester and York. Although that did mean more hanging around than your suggested route and less flexibility on trains.

If you didn't mind leaving Stoke in the early hours on Saturday and arriving back into Stoke in the early hours of Sunday morning, and waiting in Manchester for 3 hours then the lowest I can get it down to is £33.45

National Express Stoke - Manchester £5.50
Megabus Manchester - Newcastle £7.00
Train Newcastle - Berwick £9.05

Return :

Train Berwick - Newcastle £5.50
Megabus Newcastle - Manchester £1.00
National Express Manchester - Stoke £5.40
