With Real Time Trains reporting a train fault (M8) today 4th March on the first of my two commute to work Northern Rail services (2N61) - I am keen to better understand what took so long to fix - any ideas ?

fortunately I have been able to work from home for the day instead, since it appears it was the 4th next service - 2.5 hours later - that arrived to pick up passengers at my local station, Poynton

I've no answer for you, you just put me in old fart reminiscence mode ... I went by train every school day from Poynton to Cheadle Hulme, later Manchester, between September 1970 and December 1976. No "work from home" option for my dad, who also got the train. There was a 190 regular bus alternative I think, and another one from Woodford Church for those lucky enough to have cars. I certainly recall train strikes, and 3 day week problems, but never anything quite like an unscheduled lack of trains for hours that I remember, although of course it must have happened sometime.

Was it the 331 to Blackpool that failed between Congleton and Kidsgrove?

The 331 then appears to have been rescued and then failed again between Cheadle Hulme and Stockport. It looks like this failure is going to cost a few quid with the delays caused.

A 323 would have been much easier to rescue.

Yes ... it has been a (shiny, new) 331 on most of my recent rides at that time (2N61) ... yet unable to confirm what was allocated today

331021 is the unit which broke down. For some reason the rescue unit (I'm assuming a second 331)when it attached and moved the failed unit could only move at 30 mph.

Can confirm that 331021 is correct.
I got the 0715 (323236) from Congleton this morning and ‘passed’ (stopped along side to rescue passengers from) the broken train. (Some pics below)
