Stopping boards at humped platforms

Northwich station has had a Harrington Hump installed. The Manchester bound platform now has stopping boards for all 2 car trains, 4 class 142 cars and 4 class 150 cars. The intention is obviously to have the front passenger door stopped where the hump is, or on a 4 carriage train the front passenger door of the rear unit.

How do they decide how many boards to put up without going over the top?

At Northwich single 142s and 150s are the norm with single 156s, 142+142 and 150+150 also used but it's also possible to get 142+150, 150+156, 142+156 and 156+156 combinations.

Marks Tey Platform 3 was the first place to have such things, way before the Harrington craze, that had three train stop signs at the Colchester end, then in the middle and one at the Sudbury end for services going the other way.

And that was just for two unit types which ran with just 1 unit at a time
