Due to a train breaking down between Northallerton and Darlington. All lines are blocked.

‏@Virgin_TrainsEC

A broken down train between Northallerton & Darlington is causing delays up to 2 hours for trains between York and Darlington

Oh dear, that'll knacker those who travelled early to avoid the closures. I hope the railway is willing/able to sort out hotels for the passengers that get stuck until tomorrow.

Yeah, the 91 on 09:30 London Kings Cross - Edinburgh lost its' pantograph at East Cowton. Rarely something that can be quickly resolved, although at least some trains are managing to get round now: Looks like the 10:00 KX - Aberdeen was diverted via the Durham Coast, while following services have been able to run via Darlington with varying degrees of late running.

Network rail has tweeted that the line between Carlisle and Leeds is single line only until the end of february due to landslip.

#VTECUpdate We'll be operating a reduced timetable today/tomorrow. Expect extended travel times. See https://www.virgintrainseastcoast.c...isruption-id=3AF7728E64C24F7EA46F20E73D073E6A before travel.

High winds have caused damage to the overhead wires near to Darlington. This damage in turn caused damage to a train resulting in the line being blocked.

The broken down train has been moved and services are also able to use other lines but delays of up to 2 hours can be expected between York and Newcastle until 19:00.

First TransPennine Express services between Liverpool Lime Street and Newcastle will only run between Liverpool Lime Street and York. An hourly bus service will run between Newcastle, Chester-le-Street and Durham and other services may make additional calls at Chester-le-Street.

Lot of these lately. Are any due to tree removal? Solve one problem... :)
In theory at least, tree removal should make a slope more stable: the roots will still largely be there, with no heavy tree to catch the wind.

. Tree roots damage embankments but this is not apparent while the trees are healthy. when trees die or are removed the roots rot over a period and then landslips are prone to occur, landslips were much less of a problem in the days of steam, vegetation was cut back and trees not allowed to grow because of fire risk.

Saw an VTEC HST at East Boldon earlier today and wondered what was going on. 67 with the failed set still at Heaton tonight.

Like you said, it takes years for the roots to rot away. The tree clearance program that Neil Williams was referring to has only been underway for a year or two at most.

Single line bi-directional working remains in place today as a result of the class 91 entanglement at Hutton Bonville/East Cowton, with the Down line still shut - Wind speeds were too high to enact a repair last night.

Southampton/Reading to Newcastle Crosscountry services turning round at York as a result. Same for Liverpool - Newcastle TPE services I believe, as posted above.

Yes disruption is expected all day high winds also mean speed restrictions are in place between Berwick and Darlington

First TransPennine Express are not running between Newcastle and York today

Things seem to be running OK at the moment, with the adapted timetable working fairly well - trains arriving from the south into Newcastle about 15-20 minutes late due to speed restrictions. Perhaps the York-Edinburgh line needs a bit more of this pre-emptive adaptation, though I can see the challenge with three operators over a long stretch of track.

Is that section bidirectionally signalled or is it being done the old-fashioned way?

Bi-directional signalling under SIMBIDS, currently in use between Northallerton and the East Cowton crossovers. 50mph maximum for wrong direction workings over the Up line.

As well as the delays in the Darlington area further problems have occurred further south

@Virgin_TrainsEC Due to overhead wire/signalling problems between King's Cross and Stevenage services are being delayed:

Lends support to what I have long since thought. Things can be kept moving fairly well when there is bidirectional signalling. Otherwise chaos ensues.

Sleepers are diverted via Sunderland apparently (according to nationalrail.co.uk) - a scenic tour in the dark!
