What is the most mileage that I can get in one day from Ash Vale?

I can get roughly 800+ by going upto Edinburgh and back.
Is there anything that will get me 1,000+?

Cheers.

You could easily do 4 York or Manchester returns in about 10 hours, which is about 1600?

Really? Crikey.
So is it better to do quick and shorter journeys like London-York/Manchester or do a longer journey like London to Edinburgh?

Your in the South East.... Go round the loops a couple of times, down to Dover all ways, then Manchester and back.

I'm in the South West. But is that really going to get more miles than something like London-York returns?

Yes true you are in the South West of England with the Cornish and the Welsh Border. Thought Ash Vale was in the South East of the UK just west of London never mind. Rail Services around London and the South West.

Add it all up, you don't really want to be doing say a long drag that averages out to not alot when i suppose you could do lots of little things with like +1 connections then to top it off just one big thing thats mostly max line speed (like ECML to Doncaster or something).

Hmm, see, I think I'd rather be sat on two boring, long rides than lots of short ones.

ECML is best cause there's free WiFi that I can sit around on all day!

Well if it's Wi-fi bashing you want to clock up the yes do ECML. Just look for limited stop trains but without all the slack time etc... The "South West" is full of them going from the terminals back and forth. The Pendo Primo stuff is good as stuff like first stop Preston etc... give you time.

High Speed journey are most mileage efficient so York-London Kings Cross a few times is the obvious option. (fast journeys - not stoppers)

Plenty of Grand Central if you can. Valenta's and sub 2 hours London to York sometimes just in time for one back!

Hmm. I can't afford GC. But I did plan Ash Vale, London, Edinburgh and return, and it only got like 800 something miles. Would I be able to rack up more by doing Ash Vale, London, York, London, York, etc...?

Depends how early/late you fancy leaving and getting back.

Last year (or 2006, I can't remember), when working out massive HST mileage trips, I totted up the following:

0400 SWA - RDG
07xx RDG - PNZ via BRI
1730 PNZ - SWI via BRI
23xx SWI - SWA

Did that myself in May 2004, some serious mileage covered. I believe I did notch up a higher mileage plan before, but I forget what it was. If I could find my FGW HST diagrams, I'd find you a high mileage plan off that. But I can't remember where they are.

Assuming, though, you're a fan of early starts/late finishes you could always do an early run from Ash Vale into London, get on the first limited-stop Pendo to Glasgow, come straight back and finish the same night in Ash Vale. 802 miles on 390s plus the other bits to/from Ash Vale.

If you're really hardcore on mileage building, you can't go far wrong with following this one:

0400 CDF - ABV
0509 ABV - PAD
0915 PAD - CDF
1155 CDF - PAD
1445 PAD - SWA
1829 SWA - PAD
2245 PAD - SWA

Going by the NRT, I measured that to be...1068.50 miles. Granted, it takes around 21 hours to do, but well worth doing if you really want mucho miles.

The other alternative is to do as others suggest and do YRK - KGX shuttles. Around 186 miles each way, so a few of those could deal with getting the magical thou in a day.

Oh, and congrats on getting so many miles in already this year Gizmogle. My best efforts thus far have gotten me 3,151.50 miles for the year.

I gave you 1416.....http://www.railforums.co.uk/showpost.php?p=197563&postcount=78

Because you insist in starting in the @$$ end of nowhere........

Code:
xxxx 0438 AHV
0539 0548 RDH
0617 0630 CLJ
0709 0718 WFJ
0912 xxxx SPT
177 + the fannying round from AshVale to Watford

Code:
xxxx 0923
1128 1135 EUS
1334 1354 SPT
1607 1635 EUS
1835 1854 SPT
2107 2205 EUS
0058 xxxx SPT

Thats 1219 plus the buggering about the home counties.......

If 1854 SPT-EUS is early, try for
Code:
xxxx 2115 EUS
0830 INV/CODE]
That is stretching the 24hr bit a bit but
[CODE]xxxx 2115 EUS
0456 xxxx Stirling
is 24hr 18mins. and adds many many miles - 350/400 odd?
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Code:
xxxx 0600 York
0812 0830 LKX
1033 1133 York (Prev Dep 1029)
1343 1400 LKX
1553 1630 York (Prev Dep 1555)
1845 1900 LKX
2101 2136 York
0015 xxxx LKX

8 trips at 186m = 1488miles

For the full 24hrs... try adding
Code:
xxxx 0322 M'Cr Airport
0518 xxxx York

and
Code:
xxxx 0024 SPI
0124 0225 TBD
0322 xxxx SPI

You'll have to do your own milages for these.

Just a day out that gets lottsss of miles.

I can't afford any sleeperage.

You really thought you could do 800+ without having to pay extra for stuff, surely this trip would take up quite a few boxes considering the amount of trips you're doing. Unless you're planning not to tick some?

I have my new priv now.

Yes, I can do over 800 without paying for stuff. The trip would only take up one box if it was done in less than 2 days.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't realise you quoted the sleeper thing. But I can get over 800 miles without the sleeper.
