NR 57 has been announced to be visiting the gala, taking 50026 from Eastleigh
Will it be working passenger trains ?

During last year's Swanage gala 57601 was stabled at Swanage for the weekend (rather frustrating as I need it for haulage since conversion to a 57).

For the first time we have produced a 40-page full-colour illustrated guide and timetable for 11th to 13th May 2012. With a cover price of £1, the printed guide will be free for those purchasing a rover ticket - but a donation to our funds would be gratefully received of course!

The programme includes details of the Dorset Beer Festival, visiting locos, timetable and of other events around the railway.

It really does seem like they are tempting fate putting 50026 on the cover of that booklet.. Does anyone know if the low power problems have been sorted out yet?

33012 Is now likely to be OUT of the Swanage Diesel gala, after failing at Trent Junction on it's pick up trip to the Midlands yesterday. It has now just about made it's way to Burton Upon Trent where Nemisis Rails 47375 is continuing to make the loco pick-ups - whether or not it will run at Swanage i dont know, but at the moment it's looking unlikely.

I'll be at the Swanage gala. First one I've not been working and therefore couldn't go. Shame about 33012. Hopefully 47375 can take its place.

Reports that the convoy is off back to Kiddy after something went Pete Tong. Rumour I've heard is the U-Boat is the issue, but unconfirmed.

It beats me why they ever promise anything specific for these kind of things (Galas and Railtours) at all. A case in point being the tour to Swanage the other week that was advertised as Princess Elizabeth, but had to be changed to Bittern at the last minute. I don't know why they don't just say "well, we'll see what we can arrange or whatever turns up on the day". I mean, if people save up and book advance tickets from Nottingham (say) specifically for one particular engine, and that goes Chris Moyles, they might feel a little miffed and/or disappointed.

(Do i assume the U-Boat is th Warship? )

No problems with the 'U-Boat' as the new wave brigade call it. The 47 has burst, 50049 has been prepped and sent to rescue the convoy, possibly back to Kidderminster.

The vac is indeed on the north end of the convoy in Haresfield Loop so looks like a return to Kiddy. These Swanage convoys never seem to go to plan!:(

Ohhhhhh bugger. Convoy returning to Kidderminster, and it seems the gala line up is 57312, 50026, 33112 and D5401. Oh dear:(

I really feel for the gala organisers:( Lots of hard work must have been put in. I guess it's a bit late in the day to be pulling rabbits from hats as well in terms of a replacement or two.

I've just been sent a text and now there will only be four locos at the gala. That is not good. Just my luck when I manage to book an extra day off work to add onto my weekend off. Now has become a very expensive 2 day ticket.

A tad harsh Schnellzug - if there's no other means of getting the locos to the event, what are they supposed to do?! It's bloody short notice to get a loco and driver out now.

I do wonder if Knights or GBRF have owt that could make the journey from Eastleigh-Swanage to salvage something for the organisers. Doubtful I know.

I know that they cover this on someof the trips in the South West with the phrase "from a pool of :- Loco 1, loco2 & Loco 3
EG:- Main Line Steam
Railway Touring Company running Bristol - Weymouth and return. Engine returns from Weymouth for turning and servicing, arriving early afternoon (precise times not yet known). Engine from pool 5029 ‘Nunney Castle’ and 34046 ‘Braunton’. For details of Railway Touring Company please CLICK HERE

Additional related post :-
I'll be going on Saturday and will enjoy it because I love the line.
A thought for the future though is this :- Can they not send the convoy down earlier , a day or 2 perhaps , so that a contingency plan can be kicked into action if this problem happens ?

I thought initially that storage could be a problem but they can cope during the gala so why not a day or 2 earlier ?
There may be the odd loco which couldn't travel in this timescale but that's easier to bear than losing the entire convoy.

Usually the convoy arrives a day or two earlier, but it depends on paths, loco readiness and so on. As the fault that started it all was apparently a hot box on D6515 I doubt that would have made any difference in this case.

47375 failing as well is just really, really bad luck. Does anyone know what went wrong with it?

47375 has flashed its generator.

I thought the Deltic may have been initially the problem for being rubbish. A common fault with the Class.

73136 should be going down to act as vac brake for the 57.

One diagram is likely to be a kettle.

Does mean a better diagram for the vac though

Enjoy

heavens, this little expedition has been rather jinxed, hasn't it. Any chance they might get there by the weekend?

* This, incidentally, is actually a U-Boat, I believe.
And great engines they were too. The 219s were U-Boats too I believe

Not entirely , 47375 was on the train in sufficient time to get to Kiddy on the right day and then failed in transit by which time there would've still been a day to spare if they'd run on Wednesday.
I also think that if they can find a path on Thursday they can probably find one on Wednesday and reserve one for the Thursday but hey-ho !.

Last year , you may recall that a 33 which was in the convoy developed hot axle boxes and had to be taken out and parked at Soho depot. If this had been the lead loco they'd have been in the same Dickie's Meadow.

Couldn't agree more - all that hard work undertaken over a period of months and it all goes out of the window, pretty soul destroying. Not good for the locos owners/volunteers either who have spent time preparing their locos and then making arrangements to attend the event as support crew.
