Whilst I appreciate that the 701 is also intended to replace other older stock, what's the reasoning behind replacing the recently introduced 707's?

What's the pros and cons?

Cheaper leasing costs for the Class 701 v Class 707, with the benefit of a single metro fleet for the purposes of training and maintenance.

The Rolling Stock company takes the risk here that its 707 fleet is homeless and it has an expensive asset sitting empty in the sidings.

707 have no toilets, 701 do. Definitely needed as 701s will be used on Waterloo-Reading which is almost a 90 min long journey

The franchise ITT covers the reasons. In addition to jw’s points above, the DFT’s changing specification for standing capacity and dwell times on suburban services calling at Clapham Jn firmly implied the incoming franchisee would have to replace the 707s.

...but Bigfoot is also right, it’s been covered in numerous previous discussions, for example in the ”707 introduction” thread.

Prediction

The 701 fleet won't be as reliable as the table topping 707 fleet.

The Class 700s aren't exactly doing well, how are the Class 707s so much better for reliability? [Aside from Wimbledon's seemingly magical touch]
