Good afternoon all. :)

I have already posted this in the Class 442 thread, but it makes sense to post it here also.

I have found online an actual picture of the interior of a refurbished Class 442.

Nice picture, I like the leather headrests and in general I like the SWR moquette

Not another one.

Yep and it's looking fairly terrible in some units already. It's not the day to day general dirt that affects it, it's things like food stains which thanks to it being a dark grey / blue-y colour shows up fairly well.

Unfortunately though this is SWR and thing do seem to be either done the SWR way or no way.

Going lightly off topic though, I've noticed that Siemens must have found an unused stash of SWT moquette recently as there seems to be a few of the SWT interior units running around with brand new SWT covers on them.

The issue isn't toughness, it's staining from e.g. the inevitable coffee spills. You don't see it on moquette because it stains the cloth under the pile rather than the pile itself.

Interestingly a similar debate turned up on facebook recently. It was left with someone from a TOC telling us that Cloth & Closed Loop Moquette is better because customers would rather see the stains and dirt than know (or not) that it's there in the seat.

Which explains in part why the TOCs use it and are determined to keep re-learning the same things many times over. That and being utter cheapskates who clearly don’t give a stuff about the punters.

All the refurbished SWR trains do look at lot mankier than the SWT interior
Personally I prefer the standard class SWR to SWT, but I guess it's a matter of taste. 1st Class is awful, though. Slippery "leather" on concrete.

The SWT red moquette certainly showed up stains more than the blue NSE moquette that it replaced.

Based upon several recent trips on 450s, people seem happy with any kind of cloth on the footrest opposite their seat. Seems pointless spending money on refurbishing trains used on local routes. Washable plastic would be more appropriate.

That seems to be *slightly* missing the point. If the TOCs want passengers to see it, then they're going to need to take them off every night and put them through some massive washing machines.

(Obviously this is impractical, hence moquette...)

But anyway, a coffee stain, particularly black coffee, is just a stain, it isn't full of bacteria etc. That's what the vast majority of it is.

Airline and longitudinal rather than facing seating is the "fix" for that issue. But regarding your point more generally, a lot of countries do use vinyl for local trains - people do remark on the level of comfort on say LU being very high compared with the average metro system, say.

Yes, I've never come across moquette on any other metro system I've travelled on. Quite a few just have plastic moulded seats.

I have noticed some of the 159 roofs are beginning to get pretty filthy (unsurprisingly).

Alas, this is no criticism, the livery actually looks A LOT nicer with a dark roof, especially because the bit the cleaner reaches just about extends onto a small section of the roof, giving a nice white highlight.

Here's a photo that demonstrates what I mean.
