Fratton and Fareham both getting the same treatment with funds released from NR, let to believe it was a combination of gritting salt, and the south coast salty air corroding the steps. Hopefully the new surface they receive will be a long term fix considering the bridge is only about 10 years old.
Fareham at least was badly installed, IMHO. The stair treads seemed to be poorly fitted rubbish on the day it opened, I don’t think they survived the first winter, and adequate repairs have never been made.

At the same time though, it’s very rare to see these footbridges ever being thoroughly cleaned.

Yes, I've noticed that SWR never provide information on location of First Class at stations in announcements/in the CIS like other operators, any idea why?
It’s at the London end of 444s by default, they even turn the trains if they get out of position after engineering diversions. They do usually announce when they are the wrong way round though, in my experience.

There’s little point in announcing a 450, as pre-mod they were in carriage 2 or 3, 6 or 7, 10 or 11 of a twelve car. As modified they’ll be in up to six cars of a twelve car. What use is an announcement at the moment if they don’t know if a fully modified train will appear?

Thanks, that makes sense.

Is having 2 x 159s away on refurb leading to any short forms on the Salisbury - Exeter services, or is it possible that there are enough units to go round anyway (especially since the South Hants local DMU services all finished)?

So looked at from the opposite point of view, will there be more strengthened DMU services to come once the overhauls are finished?

Do the 'South Hants locals" refer to the Southampton-Portsmouth line? If so, no SWR DMUs are used on that line. I think you are correct that having 2 x 159s away at Loughborough does lead to short formations on West of England services, especially as SWR already have a limited number of 158/159s.

No, the term was usually used in the franchise agreements as a catch all term for all those odd peak extra services such as Basingstoke to Portsmouth, Basingstoke to Southampton, Winchester to Totton, Eastleigh to Portsmouth etc etc that didn’t fit the normal all day patterns.

Running a 159 on the Netley line was just a normal service on that route, albeit with different stock. I think that finished somewhat earlier.

Yes - it's 159015 returning from its C6 overhaul at Loughborough. Fully re-liveried - and I assume a new interior has been fitted.

Thanks. I only picked up on it because the Leicester to Portbury move has delayed it plus several other services between Birmingham and Bromsgrove.

159015 returning today, 5 weeks after 12 June. Is that how long they take on average?

One of each maybe? They apparently aren’t starting until the interiors are done.
Whilst that is the official line, is it not more to do with no room at Bournemouth until the 442s go into full service / no spare units until the 442s go into full service?

Could be. But IIRC it was reported in Modern Railways well before the present 442 delays were apparent.

I've found a time-lapse video showing whats involved in the full refurbishment of the 444s and 450s. It's quite interesting imo!
