I did travel on a refurbished 159 recently, the poles are dark blue by the vestibule doors, and a silver-ish colour by the doors. I wonder why they've changed on the 159s but not on the Desiros...
The artists impressions of the refurbs showed them in a lilac/blue colour. I imagine they haven't been changed simply as a time/cost-cutting exercise.

Unfortunately that isnt a surprise, read in a couple railway magazines recently first are having finance issues with the franchise in general

Shame though cause although the light blue walls works with the colour scheme the orange will never

Looks like some fully refurbished units are missing the blue hand grips now too and some of the stickers are already missing and peeling off

No it isn’t. 2 x 8 vs 24 originally. All are table seats now, previously there were 8 in the middle at tables and 16 airline.

Question:

Do they fit all new seat covers when the semi refurbed 450 units are being fully refurbished?

Doesn’t the semi-refurb already provide new seat covers throughout the standard class parts of the train? Then the second phase work must provide a few extra standard seats for use in the former first class area and guards office space, with some transferred in from the end cars, ie the new first class areas.

Yes, all new seat covers (and cushions) in both 1st and standard class.

Probably when the Desiro interior refurbishments are finished (I'm guessing around January/February 2020). With the current refurb speed, I think the 444s will actually be completed before the 450s.
Hopefully they'll get repainting the 444s as soon as they're done as they currently look dreadful.

Apologies for being stupid, but what is the difference between a repaint and a refurbishment? I assumed that when the units went for a repaint they would be refurbished? Also, what does a refurb actually consist of?

Much as people would hope, I doubt if an interior refurbishment can be accurately defined. Other words used include refresh or overhaul. As I see it, the 450 and 444 fleets are receiving increased capacity modifications, ordinarily a refurbished train could end up exactly the same as it started out. What the owner calls the work seems up to them, ie the boundary between refurbishment and structural alterations (such as removal of guard’s offices, repositioning bulkheads for first class, and removing 444 buffets) is blurred.

A full exterior repaint may often coincide with a new operator’s livery, an interior repaint might be part of a refurbishment, and they may or may not take place together. As this thread indicates, the SWR new livery is being intentionally done separately to the interior work.

A repaint is when the exterior of a train is given a new coat of paint. A refurbishment is when the interior of a train is improved e.g. by installing new seat covers and carpets. The 159s are currently being repainted and having a semi-refurbishment inside, but the Desiros are having a full interior refurbishment.

Sorry to be a pain, but is there a list of the current units in SWR livery? Also, is there any talk on if 455s will receive the new livery?

444040, 450111, 158887, 158888, 158890.

159s
001, 002*, 003, 004, 005, 006, 007, 009, 010, 011, 012, 013, 014, 015, 016, 017, 018, 019*.

* = currently being done.

455s will not be re-liveried as they will be replaced with new class 701 trains.

OK - thanks! So is it just 442 delays that are slowing this down? Sorry to be stupid, but surely repainting existing units and bringing new ones into service are completely unrelated?

It is related because they are trying to run additional services without the expected (or planned) number of 442s. So some services are short formed, and the 450 work has been slowed down.
