I will say where does the 14:20 SWT Waterloo to Penzance (Saturday service) terminates.
If cancellations occurs- it will be written Cancelled

If you want to know what stations does the train call at, ask Yorkie for the "14:27 Penzance announcer" done by me ;)

Why is this service running, and with what stock?

Why does any train service run?
It runs (usually) with 159s, but I assume a 158 could, in theory be seen on it.

Well I certainly wouldn't be doing the whole of that journey on a 158

I doubt anyone would do the whole of that journey full stop! (Not if they have any common sense, that is).

The service is operated by both. 159s are basically 158 with a centre car...

But there are 3-car 158s!
I'm not entirely sure on the difference, especially when comparing SWT 158s to their 159s.

There isn't any interior difference - the only techo difference is that they have different Air Con & different brakes

SWT have a 158, but I dont think it will find its way onto this service. This service is usually always a 159, today it was, although it started at par. There 158s are done to the 159 standards, which I have to say is brilliant.

2 159s go as far as Exeter St Davids where they split with one going forward and the other returning back to Salisbury/Waterloo.
The SWT 158s (which there are two) are used on the Waterloo to Bristol services where they run with a 159 as far as Salisbury before splitting.
I have been on the Salisbury to Exeter 159s but prefer and remember the 50s from years ago.

Would it be a tad pointless for SWT running from London - Penzance seen as FGW stop at most stations after Plymouth anyway?

It's always ran by DMUs ;)

It isn't Pointless, It means you can get a direct train from any station between waterloo and penzance, without having to change at all.

The 159s also do work Bristol services though, the 1220 from Waterloo is 3 units, with the Bristol one at the rear and splits apart at Various points.

Class 159s were done with a higher interior spec than the Class 158s, which I would assume is still the case, since I don't think any 158s have had zip done to them since they were built.

FGW don't operate a frequent enough service though, the services provided by Virgin, Wessex and SWT all do their bit to increase the frequency for local passengers, as well as providing a range of through journey opportunities for long distance passengers.

Thank you! Someone pointed it out! I think they might reach Plymouth sometimes (in fact I'm sure I've seen an SWT 159 there on a Sunday), but definately not Cornwall.

Someone pointed what out?
Plymouth is the further and run a few down that far, either by a 158 or 159.

jdjohnny pointed out the thread title is wrong, in that SWT haven't reached Cornwall, hence not Penzance either.

No, SWT come to Cornwall every week, but it's only a 159. Their 158 has never been down :)

Split at Exeter IIRC, 2 sets come down the mule and one toddles off to Kernow.

When me and my mate (with a staff pass) used to go up on charters or whatever, we'd always try to wait for the 159 to come back on, because they're such nice units compared to our rubbish.

Also have WXT trainmen working them from Exeter to Penzance and back.

Oh right. Not in passenger service then, that's what I was getting at.

Seems an unusual idea to send a 159 down to PNZ when they could much more easily go up to Salisbury...

You show me the TT where they are advertised in passenger service to Penzance? They weren't in there when I last saw the timetable (on 28th August 2005).
