Hi all, just wondering what the advice/rules are on the phone directory test when circling the double symbols. Can you go top to bottom when scanning the information or do you have to go left to right? Thanks.

I don't think it matters, I went down the columns for what it's worth, but I think you get scored on amount attempted versus mistakes.

Thanks slipper that’s great. Just wasn’t sure if they have any instructions etc. I’ll get practising!

I'm not too sure if you can actually do it top to bottom. As well as getting marked on mistakes it was my understanding that you get marked on completed rows also, not completed columns.

They will explain everything on the day. If its left to right or top to bottom etc. I'm sure it started from the left and it was top to bottom but could be wrong.

Start on left, top to bottom. That way the symbols are in a neat column

If you go left to right it’ll be much harder as you’ll be jumping across data unnecessarily IMO

top to bottom.

I practiced this test until i was blue in the face and found i was much faster top to bottom. i struggled to finish going left to right sometimes.

And because of this practice, i specifically asked if i had to go left to right like on the dots to which she said no, do it how you like.

Honestly, i don't think this is a test you can afford not to finish or get in the mindset that it doesn't matter not to finish, i know some don't finish and still pass however best to make sure. However, with some practice it isn't that hard to whizz through it.

Concur, I missed all but a few boxes at the very end (maybe less than half of the last column) and got told I was close to the mark. I didn't practice this test and probably should've.

Apologies, my mistake, for some reason I had it in my head that we were talking about the dot test.

I found top to bottom the easiest method as you simply scan down the symbols in no time.

Thanks, I’m the same. Practising I can run through with about 5 seconds spare when top to bottom but left to right I’m always too short of time. If that’s what she said I’m happy with that!

Interesting thread, has anybody got any sources for practice material for this one please?
I personally am using the programme from traineetraindriver and it’s pretty good to be honest. 15 seconds is not long though, and it’s good in that the screen changes so you can’t ‘get one more ticked off’, the screen is gone and it’s straight on to the next.

How much was the program?

£24.99 - it’s pretty basic but does the trick. Just doing it now again and again and again... ;)

Thank you very much for the recommendation, I've downloaded that and have been playing with it, I can get 100% on the first 2 tests but 40% is my best on the tones and search! It's a lot harder than I imagined.

I wouldn't focus too much on downloaded software results. I used them also, some I found quite difficult, but passed the assessment ok. I would just concentrate on them as practice. I'm not even sure they would know what the official pass mark is anyway.

Also while being similar downloaded software is not exactly the same as the assessments

How did you get on?
Mmm not sure. I was not expecting the first assesment! I thought it was no lomher used...the 6 picture story, which you have to write a report on. So that blew my mind but thankfully I knew what to do but I left out the last bullet poiny I wanted to write, which made me panic and think I may have blown it at the first hurdle! Will have to wait and see, they said it could take a week to find out results.
