I have searched, for this thread, before posting. There doesn't seem to be one previously. I saw a Tesco liveried container train at Birmingham New Street, earlier this year. Does anyone know where these trains run to/from? Thanks for any info.

Although this is the first I've heard of it a quick google has brang up a lot of pictures up in an image search. Very clever play on the livery. Says "less co 2" instead of "tesco". Suppose it must be the "tesco express"

I suppose if it made lots of stops it could be the... Tesco Metro!
(And if there was a lot to carry they could put on a Tesco Extra-Train!)

Asides from seeing one come from the WCML to the North London Line (click for pic) a couple of months yet I have no idea where they actually run from/to - apart from the information I was given which I captioned the picture - Daventry - Tilbury

Thankyou for that. On a general note, I don't find the search facility on RailUK Forums very user friendly. Maybe it's just me?

Me neither, hence I opened a separate tab and used google. Railuk threads normally show when appropriate on a google search.

I also came across an asda train on my google search for tesco trains, the result threw in the asda liveried loco http://www.igd.com/content/Images/Articles/asda-rail.jpg

I didn't know there was such a thing (ASDA train)?

I'm pretty sure they go all the way up to Inverness - I think starting from Wembley or somewhere around there.

I thought it was Eddie stobart that does Tesco's rail haulage.
Iirc, I think they may run to euro central in Bellshill.
However, I may be wrong & if I am, could someone please correct me...

The TEsco trains are ran by Stobart rail arent they? The must come from DIRFT as they have a massive warehouse there but no idea where they go to.

the best way to search this site is go to google and enter <search term here> site:railforums.co.uk

DRS operate the Tesco trains. I think they just run from Daventry to Mossend and return. DBS also run a train with the Tesco containers daily, hauled by a class 92, I often see it in the Warrington/Wigan area as it makes it's way south to Rugby from Mossend.

This week at Freightliner @ Tilbury ive seen a fair few Tesco liveried containers, i did'nt think Freightliner ran trains for Tesco so can i assume these were brand new containers being delivered to Stobarts by Freightliner... all the containers looked new?

They may have been. But I do know Stobart group like to keep their trucks and trailers clean - maybe they do the same with their trains and containers too??

I too have seen Tesco trains in Newport, a couple of years ago one was robbed while stationary at signals in Scotland,Glasgow Area if I recall, the sheeting was ripped open, spirits etc taken. Oh and of course they pass through Crewe.
Stobart Rail are also involved with logs to Chirk.

Tesco trains also run through South Wales - well, Newport at least.

Interesting - I didn't think the nearby Tesco depots at Magor and across the Severn at Avonmouth had railfreight facilities. And there certaintly aren't any Tesco depots west of there, so I wonder where they were heading.

EDIT - missed krus aragon's post - sorry!

The most common Tesco trains run from DRIFT up to their Livingston depot in Scotland.

On a related note, it has been rumoured that Sainsbury's may start using railfreight as part of their new depot at the new Exeter IMF terminal. Only local rag rumours, it must be said, but it would certaintly make a lot of sense.

I must admit that when I saw the title I thought they were bidding for a franchise! Mind you if I could earn Clubcard points on a train journey then I wouldn't mind that at all....

Tesco trains are run by DRS and DBS.
DB Schenker use their 92 to haul a daily container from Daventry (was Rugby) to Mossend (Scotland). It travels nirth in the mnorning and south in the evening. They painted 92017 in Stobart colours and named it "Bart the Engine" (if anyone remembers my first avatar). They also painted 66048 in these colours with the name "Bart the Engine" but after working the first Inverness to Mossend train under the DBS contract it derailed and today is stored at Toton, not very intact! Now DRS run that train. 92017 is currently stored

DRS use their 66s (and now becoming 57s) to haul regular container trains from Daventry to Coatbridge and Mossend. These run in connection with Malcolm Group. There are also Daventry to Wentloog (Cardiff), Mossend to Inverness and Daventry to Tilbury Stobart trains.
Separate containers are run in DRS, with Tees Dock to Ditton an example.

Other than 66048 and 92017, 66411 and 66414 have carried Stobart colours but these have now lost the colours and are presently running with Freightliner (66411 in Poland). 66434 carries Malcolm Rail colours. Although, I do not remember a mention of ASDA liveried 66 (might be like the London Midland 86), 66419 is now in DRS Compass colours running with Freightliner.

Hope this helps, Sam.

At Widnes (Ditton) the Stobart rail container depot is back-to-back with a large Tesco distribution centre, both on old railway land.
But there doesn't seem to be a connection between them.
Does anybody know if the Tesco depot is actually supplied by the rail terminal? It would seem like a no-brainer.
You can get an bird's eye view of both depots on a train from Runcorn to Liverpool, coming off the Mersey bridge.

This week on a lunchtime was a repeat of a series about Eddy Stobart trucks etc on Channel 5. It was on friday evenings I think, it followed the drivers etc of Stobarts doing there deliveries etc. It also showed you Stobarts Trains transporting Tesco,s containers, Southend Airport and station also owned and run by them and the railway maintenance side digging out ballast with a Gropher and relaying at Harbourgh crossing and station.
So look out for the programe as there is often a bit about the rail side shown on it.

66419 was ASDA liveried. I don't know if it still is? Got this info off RMWeb.
66419 never wore its' ASDA vinyls in service: It only had them applied, on one side only, for one day for a photoshoot at Kingmoor, after which they were hastily removed. The loco has never operated in anything other than DRS Compass livery.

It looks like there is also a Tesco train to Tilbury: I noted it passing through Barking yesterday heading in the Tilbury direction, and the containers didn't look new. I had previously been under the impression that the Tesco trains only operated on the Mossend to Daventry/Rugby corridor.

If you watch the Eddie Stobart programme on Channel 5 they've increasingly been showing the rail side of operations. One last week showed them transporting Irn Bru from Mossend to somewhere in the Midlands by rail.

Yes i have seen a DRS operated Stobart train at Tilbury the other week but it was in sidings that were away from the Freightliner terminal in Tilbury docks, the boxes i seen this week were actually IN the Freightliner terminal, the DRS train operates from elsewhere in Tilbury.

Highland Main Line

I used to pass the tesco Train quite regularly when I was travelling on the Northbound chieftan and it would pass somewhere between Perth and Gleneagles. The containers are non-standard in that they are unusually low, as the Highland Main Line does not have the clearance for full sized containers. There's still a few stacked up at Inverness Station.

There are local jokes (of the not-at-all-funny variety) in the Inverness area about it and the far north having become taken-over by Tesco (The larger Morrisons at Milburngate didn't raise the same sentiment).
Stobart's boast was that the train took over 40 trucks off the A9 every day.

Truth be told I was thinking the same thing.

Still going into rail could be a good business opportunity for Tesco I certainly would like to see what Tesco could do and it would be great if I could get clubcard points each time I buy a train ticket.

I saw a train of 'LESS CO' liveried containers near Chepstow a day or two ago. Didn't see the loco (trees in the way) but from what I could see I though maybe a Direct Rail Services class 66. I didn't think Tesco trains ran into Wales though, thought it was only one or two class 92 hauled trains.

P.S. While in the Chepstow area, I also saw a train of oil tankers (again was a bit slow to get a good look at the loco, but I think it was a red class 60). Do any of the oil trains from the oil refinary near Milford Haven go that way?
