There comes a point that the 769 delays are down to the TOC not getting the training on them done (for whatever reason) rather than non-availability of the trains. At that point if TfW still want the 153s then Porterbrook should be charging them for the privilege.

Training has been delayed by COVID but TFW have made great strides in setting up bubbles for tutors and pupils. The 153s were offered by Porterbrook to compensate as they were running the 769 project. This was unlike the case of the 230s where there are 2 awaiting but the Depot (Chester) has been hit by staff isolating and unable to release for training and a shortage of Instructors due to unable to pass them out.

Does anyone know if there are still any 142s out?

I'm fairly sure I saw one a few days ago but it was through trees so can't be completely sure.

I've not seen any running since Christmas Eve which was 142085. Before Christmas 150's were running the majority of Treherbert/Aberdare services with the occasional 142 on the Merthyr to Barry service. I think it's only 006/075/077 and 085 left in service but whether they have been withdrawn I'm not sure.

I'm hoping 1 might appear next 2 days, unless already withdawn, as they have returned 3 or 4 of the stored 143's from Landore.

I had been hoping there was one out on Vale services today as the Vale shuts as of tonight so today would have been the last chance.

Unfortunately that's now looking unlikely Nick. I have next 2 days off work so was hoping to catch at least 1 but I don't think I will now. :'( What work are they doing on the VOG?

I don't think there's anything specific happening on the VoG, but there's major track renewal work taking place in & around Cardiff Central, resulting in Central - Queen St also being shut and reduced services on the Valleys, with trains running to Cardiff Bay instead. Treherbert services terminate at Radyr.
So opportunities to see Pacers anyhwere on the Valleys after today will be limited.

Then from next Monday the Valleys north of Radyr is shut completely for two weeks.

So far this week no TfW 142’s have seemed to run and with tomorrow the 31 December scheduled to be their last day and TfW running an amended timetable due to works at Cardiff Central it seems unlikely we’ll see any tomorrow. If anyone hears of any running I’d be very grateful.

There doesn't look to be any pacers of either type out today from whats showing on genius. I think with the reduced need for units it seems unlikely that any 142s would creep out especially with not being able to do swaps at Cardiff.

Thank you, I only saw 150’s today so looks like that’s it for the 142’s

In case anyone is interested, here are the last passenger runs for all 15 Welsh class 142s. 142075 had the honour of the working the last service train on Christmas Eve. Probably the most low key last run for a long time. I doubt there were any enthusiasts on it.

Thank you that’s really helpful. I photos of a few on their last day or the day before. 085 was the last one I photographed on the 23/12 a few hours before it’s final run

Thanks for this excellent round up. At least I can say I had 002 and 073 on their final workings.

Even with the normally lesser service on a Sunday and many more trains and routes decimated in the Cardiff Valleys today by Engineering Work, 143616 managed to make an appearance with a 150 on a Rhymney to Cardiiff Bay diagram today.

Its on a Pacer diagram today, it finishes at Rhymney tonight so presumably its just to get a set up there for tomorrow morning.

That's dedication staying out that late! I think the last main line run for a 142 was on 26/11/20 when 142077 had its trip to Pembroke Dock. Last ever pair of Pacers was 19/12/20 when 143606+143616 did two trips to Maesteg and a trip to Gloucester.

Being as the 153s were built in 1987, diesel trains are/were designed to have an operational lifespan of 30 years (electrics are designed for 40 years).

As the 153s are now 33 - 34 years old, this means that they would be as good as worthless in terms of depreciation of fixed assets in accounting terms.

After all, the 142s which were built in 1985-86 were designed and intended to have an operational lifespan of 15 years, meaning that since 2001 onwards, somebody, somewhere, has ensured that a racketeering operation has gone on for a long time looking at it from the outside.

All BR designed traction and passenger rolling stock had, for ages, a book life of 25 years. I forget now whether that had been extended to 30 years by privatisation (I used to have the NSE T&C rolling stock in my capital account) but my recollection of the Pacers is that they were booked for a full BR life, not just for 15 years. That caused me at the time to raise an eyebrow, knowing how long bus bodies usually last.

Rolling Stock depreciation is a black art, depending on how you do it and the value of the asset you want it to have. If you are into constant revaluing your asset book, based on overhauling “to new”, you can value any asset into old age as being worth quite a sum.

There is still a slim chance we'll see a pair of 143's out as they are with us until the end of May 2021

Plenty of 143s out yesterday. Yesterday had 143606+150242, 143607+150217, 143610+150230, 143616+150283, 143623+150279 (which are out today too) and 143625+150278.

In other news, 142075+142080+142085 have just left Cardiff Central on their way to Landore with https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/87130/2021-01-05/detailed.

All the 142s will have been moved by the end of the week to prepare for scrapping and will move to Sims later. There seems a queue waiting to go to Sims.

i think they can only work with a prm unit now
The dispensation letter does not specify that they must work with a PRM unit nor the 153s unlike Northern and EMR units which do. From observations it would appear that TFW are doing it anyway.
